I've stayed at over 40 different Mercure hotels - this was the worst. Our check-in was fine - the lady was friendly although we did have to ask for a lot of the detail I would have thought she would have given us - breakfast times, bar times etc. From here it went downhill. The room felt nothing like a Privilege room I have ever stayed in. Sometimes bigger isn't better and it certainly was the case here. The room was too big and had a lot of dead space. It had no character and felt empty and unwelcoming. There were 3 random pictures on one wall and then the others were blank. The bathroom was appalling - the sink plug was clearly blocked with something and filled up after around 30 seconds of running the tap, but took several minutes to empty. The shower was even worse - after being in the shower for only a few minutes the base of the shower had filled up to overflowing point and to avoid it actually going over the edge one had to interrupt one's shower part way through. This didn't help though; there was a leak in the base and without fail after being in the shower for only a few minutes the floor around the toilet was flooded. Each time we showered we had to wring out the bathmat - this is unacceptable anywhere, but especially in a 4 star hotel. The room was also unbearably warm, even with the "air conditioning" on full 24/7. We did request a fan for the room, to be told that you don't have any - again, for a 4 star property this is surprising - and we were told to check that we hadn't accidentally turned the radiator on. We checked, and we hadn't. We chose instead to have the window open overnight and turned off the A/C - this cooled the room instantly. The A/C clearly doesn't work. Unfortunately whilst having the window open did make the room a bit cooler, it also meant that late one night we were able to overhear 2 members of staff shouting at one another in the courtyard below for around 10 minutes. This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable in an area where guests can overhear. I cannot understand why you are unable to restock the mini-bar because of Covid, but are happy for housekeeping to come into the room daily, and for staff downstairs to hand over drinks & snacks for the room without wearing gloves. It just doesn't make sense. I also find it terrible that you advertise & offer a Nespresso branded coffee machine in the bedrooms but yet do not supply Nespresso coffee pods. This led to a really cheap feel about the whole experience. We had a drink in the bar one evening using my drink's voucher. Service was bad, and for a hotel with a sign at the door advertising a cocktail festival, and for a restaurant with around 15 different bottles of gin used to decorate the room - why is there no cocktail or gin menu?! You have so many different bottles for decoration but only serve 2? It was so disappointing. We left after around 10 minutes - there was no atmosphere. Breakfast was poor too. On the first morning it was okay, although there was no orange juice. The second and third morning the service was terrible; hot food was not replaced, no juice again, and the short male server who had checked us in to breakfast was rude and miserable - and no where to be found when we needed to tell him about missing food. I could not believe that there was no orange juice for 2 mornings on the trot. We considered checking out after our first night but did not want to waste our day in Munich trekking luggage from hotel to hotel. When we actually did check out, incompetence at reception led to us being overcharged by €80.00 - it has taken 2 emails to the hotel to get this sorted, a complete waste of my own time. The poor quality accommodation and service but a damper on our stay and left a bad taste in our mouths about both Mercure and Munich. As I say, I have stayed in over 40 Mercure hotels worldwide and this was the worst without question.

Dear Mr. D., Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience at the Mercure Hotel München City Center. I am sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations; please allow me to express my sincerest apologies. Please give me the opportunity to respond to some of your comments. Regarding our rooms you’re right. They got no decoration or other equipment which is not absolutely needed to stay. Due to the corona pandemic we unfortunately had to remove most of the products from our rooms. But on request we have prepared everything for you at the reception, from the shower to the bathrobe. It is also possible to order this via room service. Regarding the inconveniences regarding the bathroom and the air conditioner I would like to apologize again in highest form to you. This is of course not our standard and will be repaired by our technician as soon as possible. Also the disturbance by our employees is not acceptable. we will take another look at the processes here and optimize them if necessary to avoid these inconveniences in the future. You are absolutely right regarding your statement about the Nespresso machines. We do not use original Nespresso capsules for environmental reasons, as they are a great burden on the environment. Instead we use environmentally friendly capsules made of wood and filled with organic coffee of the highest quality. I can guarantee that no savings are made here, but we always try to keep the environmental impact as low as possible, as part of the Accor planet 21 program We will try to make the communication more transparent in order not to give anyone the feeling of drinking inferior quality coffee. Concerning the minibar it is necessary to have as few points of contact in the rooms as possible to meet our hygiene standards, while the pandemic. In normal times you have the possibility to choose between up to 50 different gins and various tonics. unfortunately we also had to react to the corona crisis in our restaurant, so our drinks and menu is currently very reduced with much less choice. i am very sorry that we could not meet your expectations in our "relax restaurant". Regarding your inconveniences at our breakfast and check out, please allow me to express my sincerest apologies again. All our efforts are focused on preventing future incidents such as this, so we will also take another look at our work processes in these areas and optimize them if necessary. I hope you will give us another chance, perhaps after the pandemic situation, so that we can show you our normal services and high standards. I arrived in the old Terminal 1 (Gates A to E) at Munich airport on an Air France flight from Paris. I came out of Gate E at the very end of the terminal and had to walk to Gate D to catch the Lufthansa Express bus from Modul D outside which comes every 15 minutes and costs €11 when you buy the ticket on the bus. It stops once near the Pullman in Schwabing and then at the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). The bus is comfortable and the trip takes 45 minutes. You then walk through the station and take the exit on the opposite side at Ausgang Süd Bayerstrasse. Cross the road, turn left then take the first on the right after the Italian restaurant on the corner and you will see the hotel a little further down on the left. It's a 10 minute walk. I got a friendly welcome from Thomas at reception who gave me a wooden key card instead of a plastic one. As a gold member I received a code for Premium Wifi, a voucher for a free drink and an upgrade to a privilege room on the 7th floor which was a duplex. The minibar was free and breakfast was included in the price. I also found a welcome note and a packet of chocolate covered almonds. The room was carpeted with the living room and bathroom on the ground floor and the bedroom upstairs. It would have been nice to have some coat hooks near the door in the entrance to hang up a coat. There were two armchairs by a lamp and a small table with a cushion on one and one footstool which was fine as I was alone. There was a desk with an armchair and another lamp. The radiator was underneath the window but the long curtains covered it so I would suggest cutting the curtains to leave the radiator uncovered so it can better heat the room. There was a large TV screen, tea and coffee making facilities and a small bottle of Sekt in the free minibar with beer, soft drinks and some snacks. Upstairs there was another TV screen and radiator. There were tables and sockets on each side of the bed which was very comfortable with 4 pillows and 2 cushions. I called housekeeping to get a sheet as I am usually too hot with a duvet and it was delivered promptly to my room. I went to the restaurant on the ground floor for my free drink which was a tiny 10cl glass of white wine, I felt they could have been more generous with the serving. I had dinner there too and it was fine even if I had to wait for ages and there was far too much sauce in the Caesar's salad. There is no swimming pool or spa. It takes 15 minutes to walk to the town hall.
