« The staff make all the difference. »

The front-desk personnel, room service, the restaurant staff -- all first-rate. Friendly, helpful, very pleasant. During my trip, I also stayed at Naumi in Mangere, the Chateau Tongariro and Novotel in Hamilton -- all of which were fine, but my stay at the Mercure was the best.

« Very friendly and efficient staff in all areas. »

This hotel was booked as part of a Mystery Weekend I won so I did not choose or book it. However I was extremely impressed and happy with our stay and would have no hesitation making a personal reservation. I have come back to this section as several of the questions are not relevant as I did not book or pay for this stay.

« Great location with hidden fees »

Came here on our honeymoon. We have never heard of the hotel chain but decided to stay here. We enjoyed the location and access to downtown Wellington. The bed was comfortable as were the sheets. No noise from the city, which was nice! Front desk staff was wonderful when we checked in and very kind. We did not enjoy the multiple cards in one day asking to get into our room and change our towels. We had the do not disturb sign on the door because we did not want our room cleaned for environmental reasons. We aggressively received multiple cards asking us to open the door. We tried to look in the in-room menu at a cost of breakfast but there was no cost listed. We checked on trip advisor and saw a review that stated "lovely stay with a free buffet breakfast was such a treat." There was a response from your hotel on that review thanking the guest for the lovely comment, instead of correcting the comment that breakfast was not free for everyone (I did not know this at the time). So thinking there was a free breakfast, we also went to the bar in the morning and before we sat we even ASKED the person working to tell us everything we need to know regarding breakfast. He told is we could go around the corner and enjoy a buffet breakfast. What he did not tell us was that we needed to pay for it. I've never been in a county that does not prepare you for a cost of service. We went through various steps as stated above to check and see if we had to pay for it and no where did it indicate this. We were dooped by your hidden fees! At the end, we were asked to sign a piece of paper. The worker did not explain what it was, so I assumed it was indicating that we received breakfast that morning (to the prevent someone from having 2 in one day I guess). I then double checked it after and saw $35 x 2 was written on it. I stated to the bartender who had is sign that trip advisor indicated the breakfast was free. He then got on the phone, I literally have no idea why. I don't understand who he was calling about a single trip advisor review. Boggle my mind. He got off the phone about 13 seconds later and states that unfortunately there is nothing he can do (again, I didn't ask him to "do" anything or call anyone, I was trying to have a conversation with him). I had my friend cancel their reservation for later that trip in another city (they were meeting us for part of the trip). So congrats! You gained $70 to lose two separate room fees for 2 weeks later. I do not remember how I booked the hotel, it was a while ago. So I just answered the first bubble below. I think the accuracy of this question would be increased with an "I don't remember" option.

I am sorry that your stay did not live up to your expectations, most certainly during such a special trip for the two of you. This is disappointing to hear, and I wish I would have been able to speak to you when you were still at the hotel so that I could have addressed this in person. Unfortunately our breakfast is not always included, this depends on the booking you made - including breakfast or not. I am sorry that the restaurant attendant was not more clear to you on this matter. They should indeed inform you if breakfast is already booked in advance or still payable. I will remind my team of this in order to get it right consistently. For the future, I do recommend to book directly on our own hotel pages to avoid any confusion, as well as not taking a single review from online pages as the source of information about the hotel. The fact that one booking includes breakfast does not mean this is the case for all bookings. Apart from this I do hope you have enjoyed the facilities and service at Grand Mercure Wellington. It would be my wish to welcome you again to show you that we really care and want to assure the best service to you.
