Five of which are listed as historical monuments and were taken into use when The Grand served as City Hall: the Council Chamber, the Burgomaster and Aldermans Chamber, the St. Cecilia and the beautiful First Class Marriage Chamber. The Princenhof, or Prince's Court, dating back to 1578, has 14 conference rooms, including a state-of-the-art executive board room and a special catering room.

The Grand Goes Inferior

We had stayed in this property a decade ago and went to it because of our previous excellent experience. We discovered right from the time of check in that the Hotel had slumped almost in every respect. As a Diamond Accor member one was entitled to an upgrade if available. It was not offered. When we asked if an upgrade was available reluctantly the receptionist responded in the affirmative. He tried hard to persuade us to not take it but when we insisted he agreed to give it to us. Our luggage was moved. When we went for lunch our upgrade was withdrawn and our luggage moved back. We were told that the room had an electricity fault and could not be given us for safety reasons. Moments later it was given to another guest. In spite of DND signs on that door the Front Office continued to deny that the room was functional and now under occupation of another guest. Only the next day when we confronted the Front Office Manager she admitted that she had lied to us. She apologised and so did the General Manager who was very polite, decent and courteous but stonewalled all requests for an explanation while denying that the reason for such discriminatory treatment was our ethnicity. In spite of repeated reminders that our child had a severe nut allergy given at the time of check in, to every supervisor in the restaurant as soon as we got our table and to the waiter in the restaurant who took our order they managed to serve Nutella to our daughter as home prepared chocolate sauce causing a severe reaction. The child was sick all day and our plans ruined. There was no explanation. Both the quality and variety of food available has declined. The laundry in spite of repeated complaints continued to fold our trousers with our undergarments and iron them like pyjamas. The overall quality of laundry and pressing was also poor. Only the head concierge Niels Essani was a reminder that this was once a good property with great service and superb staff. He went out of his way to be helpful and nice.

My short stay (2 nights) at the Sofitel Legend The Grand was perfect on all accounts. From the location to the front desk staff, the rooms, dining, service, cleanliness, etc. everything was fantastic. One of the things that makes a hotel stay most enjoyable is the helpfulness & friendliness of the staff, and the entire staff of the Sofitel couldn't have been any warmer. I truly enjoyed every moment at the property.
