My family and I had a good time during our stay. The staff were very nice and the hotel was close to the river with a nice view. The hotel offers a very nice breakfast and accommodations. They also have a very good Covid-19 policy, where we had "Hand hygiene stations "available everywhere. I would suggest to have a better control on the utilization.

Although you don't expect anything but the usual standard in these kind of hotels i did find it the hotel to be on the low side of the scale. The whole design is very boring and nothing exceeds a 3 star hotel. The tray with the cups was dusty, windows very dirty. So I cannot believe there are any special cleaning measures taken at the moment. Fridge did not work very well. The shower the beds were nice.

The hotel is near the river and has a nice walk distance to the city center. Also they have a very good policy against Covid-19 with "Hand hygiene stations" across the entire hotel. They also have a very nice garden area for breakfast and the staff were very nice.

Best service during pandemic

Breakfast buffet is open with well-managed arrangement. The room is clean just sadly no cleaning service available. The restaurant is not open so I failed to get my dinner when I'm too tired to go out. This still doesn't make sense though.

I would expect a better service from Novotel . First, the refrigerator was not working well and it seems clear that there is no maintenance or inspection for this service. The safe did not work either, despite someone trying to help.

Since 10 years we stay in this hotel for at least 1 week every single Christmas period; and sometimes for a couple of days during other periods. I presume the employees at the desk would recognize us, after all these years, and would ask us how we are but no, it seems we are guests for the first time. Employees taking care in the breakfast room, do recognize us and ask us how we are doing. Due to the Coronavirus we understand that several safety measures are put in place. But inform your guests, when booking and on the confirmation email, which measurements you have taken. After a 12 hours car drive, being hungry and thirsty, we were told at the reception that bar and restaurant are closed. The day after we noticed that our room was not done. Asking why, the employee told us: "Didn't they told you that rooms are not done due to the virus?". No, nobody informed us. So, for one week we had to take care of emptying garbage bin, changing towels; the room got quite dirty and dusty, also because we had our dog with us for which we paid 10 € a day. We do not pretend to have the room done every single day, but staying one week without a vacuum cleaner passing by. Not very healthy for the guests staying in this room. The parking garage is a + point for the hotel. But twice in one week we have found the garage more than full. In fact, one evening the gate did not even open. An employee at the reception closed it without any information or sign. The garage has several reserved parking places (I think 4) for guests with a handicap. I am in the possession, due to severe medical issues, of a European certification allowing to park on parking places for handicapped people. Nevertheless, I found twice all these parking places occupied by cars, not displaying any authorization. When I informed the employee at the reception desk about this, he said: "I cannot do anything." Upon my question why there are reserved parking places, he answered me that this is by law. Answering him that they have no use when these places are occupied by not handicapped people, he repeated that he can do nothing. (Wrong answer! He should answer that a solution will be found.) Twice I had to find a parking place somewhere else with all consequences due to my health problems. Novotel Köln City is a children friendly hotel. In the last years we noticed that from a friendly children hotel, the hotel became a children hotel, where parents accompany them. Even when most children are well educated, it is still a running in the breakfast room and yelling and crying once a while. Sometimes it is hard to have a chat with his partner. Dogs are welcome as long as they stay in the room. (Not at the bar, which was closed, not in the restaurant, which was closed too, not in the breakfast room, not in the small garden area). But on Sunday, August 2nd, we heard barking in the breakfast room and indeed, a small white dog (Maltese breed) was present. Make your hotel a 100 % smoke free hotel ! It could have be nice to have breakfast outside, but with smokers around you it is not healthy to have a breakfast when smoke surrounds you. We already booked your hotel for one week during the Christmas period 2020. When checking out, we have cancelled this reservation and will stay this time in an other hotel in Cologne. This is really pity but this one week was not a good stay and even when you have #feel_welcome, we did not feel much welcome.

I can assure you that we would be very happy to welcome you again at the hotel. We hope that by then the legal regulations can be relaxed and you can stay with us in the usual way. The hotel itself was okay, unfortunately the experience was tarnished by bad breakfast service. The man that taking care of guest during breakfast was rude, there’s no cutlery at the table, most of the food containers were empty.

The hotel is lovely and in a good position. Not a long walk from the river, chocolate museum or city centre. Room is super clean and great size. Staff were friendly. Has a restaurant and bar and sauna/gym but unfortunately didn’t get to use any during our stay.
