Poor experience, basic and tired hotel

My husband booked this hotel for myself, his mother and our 5 month old daughter as he was running the London marathon. We booked 2 rooms in advance and had contacted the hotel via phone and email to confirm the rooms were connecting and that a cot had been organised for our daughter, we were told this was the case. When we arrived in the evening to check in the lady on reception didn’t seem to be able to find our booking despite us having the booking available on email, and it took ten minutes for her to locate the booking. She then advised we had rooms on separate floors, to which we queried as we had booked and had confirmed via telephone that the rooms were next to each other, she then found us 2 rooms on the same floor but 3 doors apart which was an improvement. We were assured our cot was ready on our room, paid the full amount for the rooms via card and assumed that was all sorted. When we got to our room the decor is quite dated and damaged with carpet stains throughout. Very basic bathroom facilities and a toilet in a separate room to the sink and bath. There was no cot when we got upstairs and so when I tried to phone down to query this I discovered the phone was not actually connected and had no means to connect it, so my husband had to go back to reception to ask a cot be sent up. A further 30 mins went by and at this point my baby was asleep on our bed, when I had to go back down again and ask where the cot was. 20 minutes later a man arrived with a battered travel cot with a folded up single duvet in it in place of a mattress, as this contravenes all safety recommendations for babies to reduce SIDS I removed the duvet and had to use the pram support insert as the babies ‘mattress’ and luckily had brought my own cot sheets, if I hadn’t brought these I would have had to have gone out in London at 11pm on a Friday to find a mattress and a sheet which I likely wouldn’t have found. The rest of the stay was basic, kettle and sachets of Nescafé in the room. On checkout the lady asked us to pay the £1062 bill for 3 nights in full, to which we were very confused as we had paid it all on the Friday when we arrived and had the payment available on internet banking. The lady advised she couldn’t see that we had paid as her colleague who checked us in hadn’t ticked a box on the computer and so we would have to wait for a manager to clarify. We waited a further ten minutes for a manager to then agree we had paid the full amount 3 days earlier a that we could leave. All in all very basic hotel and even for London it’s over priced, staff don’t seem to know whether they’re coming or going and if you’re travelling with a child and request a travel cot in advance- take your own mattress and sheets!

Really enjoyed my night at the hotel. The room was very nice, modern and clean. It was very comfortable. Staff were brilliant throughout my stay and were very helpful. I will definitely stay here again when I'm next in the area.

When my team and I arrived at the hotel we were confronted with a situation of a fire occurring in the hotel the previous night and the staff were frantically trying to figure out what to do. We were sent away not knowing where we would be staying, but were told we would be contacted. That contact never came, so we returned to the hotel once the event at Excel closed around 6pm. Again we were told that the problem had not been resolved and we still hadn't been found accommodation, and were sent away for a further 2 hours. Upon returning to the hotel a 3rd time, we were eventually told we could check in and finally got to our rooms at around 9.30pm thoroughly exhausted. Not ideal, but I have to say that overall the staff did an excellent job faced with such a difficult situation. I think my team and I were incredibly lucky as not all guests faired so well, judging by some of the dramatics we witnessed. I do feel however, that we should be offered some degree of compensation. we were not even offered a complimentary drink at the bar!

Hotel looked nice. There was an issue with our room where the second bed wasn't setup, but reception quickly sorted it out by changing our room. Other than that it was an enjoyable experience.

We had an excellent stay in the hotel. The room exceeded our expectations, the hotel was well located for our purposes, staff were helpful and the restaurant and breakfast options were good.
