Disappointing stay

TripAdvisor rating 2.0/5

Curiosity51540709972 TripAdvisor review

Rooms were disappointing. Aircon did not work well, had to set aircon at 29oC to get warmth. Breakfast offer was poor in range and quality. Staff had language problems but were pleasant in trying. Room rate was too high for room quality offered. Would not recommend this property to friends.

Expectations not met

Stayed 7 nights including breakfast 5/5 to 12/5/2022. I have to say overall I was disappointed and in my view this is a very tired, ageing hotel in need of refurbishment. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but annoying things such as just 3 coat hangers in the wardrobe, poor quality pillows, 3 star amenities and furnishings at best, were difficult to overlook. The daily breakfast was adequate but very bland and unappetising. The automated coffee machine frustrating and very poor quality - particularly a problem given that there is no proper coffee shop in the immediate locale as an option. On the positive side, reception staff were very friendly and genuinely helpful and check in and check out were excellent experiences. Also no complaints about the cleaning team, who were efficient and effective given the ageing room amenities. Trust this is useful feedback.

great location, close to war memorial etc.

It's our regular hotel, we always stay here, the only thing we don't like is the breakfast, always cold and yuk. So we don't bother.

Historic hotel that has lots of potential but sadly lacks warmth, welcoming and ambience. Totally disappointed & would not return or recommend unless refurbishment is undertaken in all guest rooms & public areas. This hotel deserves better than is currently presented to guests. We have enjoyed several holidays using Luxury Escapes but this property was a letdown.

We choose to go to Mercure Canberra each year in Autumn as the colours are just sublime in and around the hotel and around Lake Burley Griffin and beyond. For us it is a special place - suits our needs perfectly! We hadn't been because of Covid so we decided to celebrate our 70th(17th!!) birthdays with a trip there in May this year for 4 nights. We arrived to a lovely presentation in our room of a 'Happy Birthday' Banner and little cupcakes and a birthday message - no doubt orchestrated by the delightful Pauline in Reception!

Really well located

Well located, walking distance to most of the tourist attractions. Historical features well maintained. However in the meals area the coffee machine didn't work for breakfasts both breakfasts I ate there, one would have thought there was time to either fix or replace the machine between breakfasts with a full house of guests. There was also a limited selection of spirits in the bar, particularly Australian boutique spirits which I imagine tourists would look for in a hotel of that calibre. My room was nice and clean, but a threadbare towel was left one day.

Hotel staff seem unmotivated. Checkin staff were surprised when I advised the carpark was open and had parked inside, but nothing was done. Room key electronics did not work and had to head back to get fixed. No-one about desk on departure.

Lovely staff. Rooms seemed cleaner than our last visit

Brooke R Business - TripAdvisor review

Its been sometime since staying at the this hotel and its always been my Canberra accommodation when I'm in town. The Hotel has charm and I understand that. But, the rooms are in desperate need of a revamp, the bed has seen better days. The shower was full of mould and my sheets had hard black balls throughout them. When I requested more pillows it seems as though they didn't want to assist me. In saying that I did receive my extra pillows but it took some convincing. I never received my usual gold member welcome gift and that was disappointing. Over all this visit was a little average.
