Bedroom not particularly clean but staff friendly

Customer review rating 4.2/5

The main public areas were very clean & staff were friendly and attentive. My bedroom however was not well cleaned. There was a hard lump of pink food on my coffee table and the wardrobe area had not been wiped over for a very long time. I have photos if you would like to see them. The bedlinen and bathroom were clean. Breakfast was lovely, chef was friendly & seating areas on level one very nice.

disappointing trip, on check in we found that the bar and restaurant were not open - only at weekends - there was nothing on the web site about this. Had to ask on second day to have room serviced. no do not disturb signs can they not be wiped with over ?

Rooms a little tired, beds definitely need an upgrade. Good enough, swimming pool is nice, most staff friendly enough.

Whilst I initially booked at another Mercure Hotel in Bristol, I was not aware that the payment had not gone through and therefore organised this accommodation on the day. I therefore reached out to Holland House. The reservation team, together with reception provided an excellent service. The room was a good size and it was nice to be able to sit down and have a full breakfast like normal. A very satisfying stay.

Enjoyable break away

First time in a hotel since lock down. We have stayed here a few times before and having parking at the hotel was great. The room was spacious and comfortable, although my wife found the bed a bit 'lumpy'. Breakfast was OK, but I felt that tea/coffee could be in proper cups (not paper), there was no cereal, croissants were pre-packed in plastic etc It just felt like it was more cost cutting. However, overall we had a nice break and would definitely return.

Perfect in exery way

Mixed Feelings

Vivian P. Couples - 07/09/2020 Confirmed reviews ALL

Have stayed at Holland House on many occasions pre-corvid so it was interesting to see the new safety measure in place and would admit that at no time did I feel these were compromised. Arrived early for a walk around the city before checking in and was pleased with the amount of space in the car park. Upon our return, checking in was quick and smooth and we were soon in our room on the 12th floor. Only thing I would say is that there was no recognition of my Accor Silver Status with no drink vouchers etc but I guess this could be due to corvid. Booked a superior room and was pleased with the size, the size and comfort of the bed, the cleanliness and the view. Whilst we had a coffee machine, only two pods were available and it was disappointing not to have bottled water in the room. Only other downside of the room was whilst the shower and bath are excellent, there was no bath sheets but only medium and hand sized towels available. Leaving and returning from an evening out was easy and the hotel is well placed within the city. After a good nights sleep, we were up early and went down for breakfast which we had been advised was a pick up and go. Good coffee, juice, pastries and hot bacon, sausage and cheese rolls gave a good start to the day and the social distancing was well managed. The most significant issue we encountered was when leaving the room to check out at 10:00am. At the lifts there were another three couples and the lifts were a maximum of two people. Time after time the lifts were called, one doors opened and the lifts already occupied. After 15-20 minutes not one of us had got in to a lift so we decided to walk. That’s when we found out you cannot walk down to reception only to fire doors in the basement and if you use them you set off the alarms. With that in mind we went back up to the second floor, and waited with another two couples to get a lift down to the first floor or reception. We waited a further 15 minutes during which time one of the couples even tried phoning reception. Finally we got down an managed to check out by 10:45! Whilst we would definitely stay here again, because of this we will wait until corvid restrictions are removed.

Well located...really poor breakfast

Have stayed here many times but this time was very disappointing. Covid restrictions may have been in place but our room had clearly been used by smokers (there was cling film over the smoke alarm which we realised had been used by the smoker) and the breakfast was really poor. There was little excuse for the lack of choice of quality...we have eaten out regularly since food locations have re-opened and even the local motorbike cafe had better choice and quality of food on offer.

Too many COVID changes

Alex W. Families - 03/09/2020 Confirmed reviews ALL

The first evening we were there, the bar didn’t have quite a few drinks, and the second night the bar wasn’t even open. No-one ever checked the rooms while we there, we had to ask for more loo paper. There were no towels available in the swimming pool - we were supposed to bring them from the room but no-one told us that. I expected some changes, but it just felt like the hotel was using COVID as an excuse. I would rather have paid less for a hotel without a bar or pool as the facilities were poor.

Very dated with poor service

harryashton1995 03/09/2020 TripAdvisor review

The worst stay I’ve ever had in Cardiff. Decided to stay here to use the pool facilities and liked the idea of room service after a long day. On the first night we ordered room service and it arrived after ringing 4 times to check it was still coming (2hrs later it arrives). After that night we ordered on 5 different w over the weekend and nothing ever arrived which left us very annoyed. The tv in the room didn’t work past the first 3 channels. The sheets on of the single beds had mud on it. Due to Covid that meant I had to make my bed myself. All in all for the money spent, terrible. The breakfast is definitely the most disappointing, we paid for breakfast for 3 days and the only hot options were bacon or sausage baguettes and one morning there was no bacon left. Shambles!

Dear harryashton1995, It is always dissapointing to read when our valued guests do not enjoy their stay with us. It would appear on this occasion we have failed to provide our usual high levels of service. For this I am very sorry. I would like to assure you these shortfalls in our service are anomalistic in nature. I do hope you will re consider us for future stays in order for us to restore your faith in our product, with regards,

The room was amazing but was very disappointed in other areas not being informed car parking wasn’t pre bookable, breakfast was a shambles not worth the money in fact we didn’t bother on day 2 and your room wouldn’t be serviced.

MY partner and I spent a few days at this hotel the room was amazing panoramic views across Cardiff the staff were friendly and accommodating the only issue I had which to us was a big one the takeaway breakfast it was awful very basic and poor im aware there is covid but feel more effort could have been made to make the breakfast worth having on our last morning we didn't bother with breakfast as it was so poor.

Disappointing breakfast

I've stayed in tbis Hotel many times, always impressed, but unfortunately not on this stay I paid extra for breakfast, expecting a cooked breakfast to be greeted with a measly 2 small dry sausages in rock hard smalk baguette. If I was aware of the breakfadt situation I certainly wouldn't of paid extra for this! I completely understand covid/ staff levels.. but this was extremely disappointing as I paid extra for a measly dry sausage.

Our stay was so comfortable. The staff had implemented very good Covid19 protection measures which made our stay very peaceful and comfortable. The location is very good and the staff so polite and helpful. The spa and bar area so beautifully decorated and spaced. The rooms are spacious and very clean. Staff response was very fast and special thanks to Elizabeth in housekeeping, she was so humble and exceptional, much thanks for the service.

Nice stay, no complaints.
