« Not impressed. If I hadn't stayed here before and had better service, I would avoid in future »

As indicated by the title, I have stayed here before and had a very pleasant stay. This time was different though: It started with check in which took a long time as there was only one member of staff on the front desk. Whilst she was quite pleasant, she was also very young and rather flippant. At no point was I acknowledged as an Accor member and no useful information was offered like what time breakfast was or what the facilities were. The room seemed fine but I quickly realised that the A/C wasn't working so plugged in the electric radiator I found in the wardrobe. That sorted out the bedroom but the bathroom was freezing. As far as I could ascertain, there wasn't any heating in there at all, unless it was underfloor? In any case, I did mention it to reception - the A/C was fixed but the bathroom was still cold. My biggest gripe is with the breakfast. I had 4 breakfasts and on 3 of them, had to search for a table which wasn't completely covered in debris. On each of those mornings, the table I found had at least some of the previous users' leftovers but it wasn't cleared whilst I was there. I don't ask much for breakfast; a bowl of cereal, some fresh fruit and tea - lots of tea... Some mornings, the cereals had run out, or the bowls, milk, orange juice, glasses... Most mornings I had to ask for something that was missing. The fresh fruit salad was usually so depleted I had to fish a few sad bits of fruit from a bowl full of juice (also tinned satsumas don't constitute "fresh fruit"). Getting Tea was my biggest problem; with only one person serving, they simply couldn't keep up. On two mornings, I'd actually finished eating by the time I got a cup. Normally, I'd have 2 big mug fulls which would equate to around 5 of your cups. You can imagine how I feel about having paid £15.50 for such a poor offering. It seems clear to me that there simply weren't enough staff available. The ones that were there were OK but could have been more proactive. For instance, I pointed out to one chap that the juice glasses had run out. To his credit, he replaced them, ALL of them but completely missed the fact that the cereal bowls had run out too... I really should have asked to speak to the manager at the time but as always, there were more pressing things to do. I hope the problems at the Southgate get fixed soon because if it's the same next time I stay, it'll be my last.

Breakfast - seemed chaotic and a constant lack of people asking for things that had run out from bowls to glasses. Very much seemed like no one in charge. My room flooded - I wondered why the light didn't work and then when the water came in through it I knew. Which I imagine also means it wasn't the first time so why let the room? Stayed here a few times but may consider other hotels in future.

Good location for Cathedral and Quay. Good breakfast. Bed/pillows not all that comfortable, room too hot as aircon could not be lowered enough and windows sealed shut. On check-out, invoice could not be printed and subsequent email was blank, with no cost details included.

Very pleased with the hotel, accommodation, breakfast and location. The Spa is very good and amenities clean and tidy. Special mention for the staff that we had contact with, particularly those at breakfast; extremely friendly and helpful combined with good old fashioned service. Super!

« Peroblems with rooms. »

I checked in around 9.30 pm on 5th February and after dinner I entered the Privilege room around 10.30 pm. I found that the TV in the room was not working properly. So I requested another Privilege room and this time the TV worked but the sink in the bathroom was blocked. So I requested another Privilege room and none was available. So they got me a standard room. Josh and Ben were excellent and did everything possible to find me an appropriate room. If not for them this description would have been more severe.

« Comfortable accommodation, good location. »

Comfortable, good location, helpful staff. The only problem was car parking, car park not only full but many cars double parked making it difficult to even turn around to get out of the car park. The only alternative was expensive public car parks.

I had read many mixed reviews of your hotel on trip advisor and was nervous of staying. However, it was great. The room was nice. The shower was clean, nice toiletries, the bed was comfy. Yes the towels could be much bigger. Nice to have dressing gowns and slippers. Didn’t use the pool area or have breakfast.

« Excellent location in central Exeter »

This was our second stay at this hotel. We really like the location, the car parking and the breakfast. We didn't like all the emails before we arrived asking us to upgrade etc. The bathroom was very good with a powerful shower but the room décor was tired.

« Well Located »

my wife and I are in hospitality. Our stay with you was very pleasant however on booking we were not given the full facts. The room was very good. (Bed , Pillows etc were excellent. We had dinner in the restaurant which leaves a lot to be desired. Would not dine with you again. ( Awful ) The staff at Breakfast were very good 1 elderly lady was a gem.

« convenient, comfortable and very clean »

The receptionist was most helpful as I made an error on booking and she amended accordingly. We have stayed several times and have always been most satisfied. The room was clean, comfortable and very quiet. The Saturday bar meal was excellent and reasonable value for money. It was also encouraging to see that the stairway had been refurbished as I mentioned this last time. I hope the Mercure continues to upgrade its decor.
