« Nice hotel but standards are slipping »

We arrived at the hotel at about 11.30 and informed that the room would not be ready until 2pm. Went back at 2 and still had to wait in the lounge until 2.45 to get the keys. In general there seems to be a major problem with cleanliness of cups and crockery. Very poor breakfast service and when I asked for poached eggs the waiter didn’t know what I was talking about, as he seemed to speak very little English. We have visited this hotel Each December since 2007 and the breakfast was a big disappointment. A four star hotel that now charges £5 extra if you want eggs benedict. There were no meals available for residents because of functions. Functions take precedence over hotel residents. Staff morale seems very low in some departments. Bedroom was satisfactory.

« Disappointing and not as expected. »

Rooms that were stained and badly marked. Breakfast was a complete shambles and not what you expect of a 4 star or pay for. Noisy , rowdy events each night could here music in room through window TIL 12 pm .

« Return visit let down by poor breakfast »

This is our fourth stay at this hotel, and we return because it's usually very good. Our children love the pool and it's close to all the shops and restaurants. However this weekend the breakfasts were a disaster, There was a huge queue, no bread for toast, no cooked food left (9.30am) then the replenished food wasn't cooked properly, no cutlery, 20 mins wait for tea and coffee - you get the picture. We didn't actually pay in the end, so the issue was resolved, but this isn't what you expect from a hotel like the Mercure Southgate. We ordered a taxi at reception 11am to pick us up at 3.30pm, so plenty of time and unfortunately this taxi didn't turn up so we missed our train. These things happen I'm sure but, I think they should review their taxi firm as well as their restaurant management. Not sure we'll return again, which is a shame

« Disappointing »

It was disappointing. The Hotel was packed and not enough staff at the bar and in the restaurant. It was four deep at the bar with two guys behind the bar. There was a wedding on so more staff should have been brought in. The same with breakfast. It was very busy and chaotic with not enough staff to serve you when requests were made. Also my bill for the stay was wrong in that my room service was charged twice until I pointed it out.

« Not up to your usual standards. »

Unfortunately we arrived to a wedding reception pre drinks in the booking in area , this created an atmosphere of chaos. Later photographs were being taken with the staircase as a backdrop and therefore unable to be used for access upstairs nor downstairs. The evening was busy with both wedding guests and evening guests along with another evening event. Morning breakfast was very disorganised.

STAYED HERE PROBABLY APPROX 20 TIMES PREVIOUSLY. THIS VISIT WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING, THE HOTEL HAS REALLY GONE DOWN HILL, THE TOWELS IN BOTH ROOMS [OURS & FRIENDS] WERE SMALL, DIDN'T MATCH & TATTY. THE HOTEL APPEARED MAJORLY UNDERSTAFFED FOR WHAT SEEMED LIKE A VERY BUSY WEEKEND [WE WAITED AT THE BAR 20 MINS MORE THAN ONCE FOR A DRINK], ALWAYS CLEARED THE TABLES OURSELVES. BREAKFAST BUFFET IS POOR QUALITY THE CHEESE & COLD MEATS LOOKED OLD, PORRIDGE - COLD & DISGUSTING WITH ABANDONED BOWLS OF IT LEFT ADJACENT TO THE POT WHERE PEOPLE HAD TRIED IT. AGAIN WAITED AT LEAST 10MINS FOR TOP UP OF HOT FOOD BOTH DAYS, THE SELF SERVE WAS NOT LABELLED AND POOR CHOICE. ALSO ON THE SATURDAY NIGHT A PILE OF SICK IN THE TOILET AND THE POLICE WERE CALLED TO ATTEND TO A FIGHT, I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS OUT OF YOUR CONTROL AND YOU CLOSED THE BAR TO NON-RESIDENTS AFTERWARDS BUT TOPPED OFF WHAT WAS NOT A GREAT CHRISTMAS SHOPPING TRIP WEEKEND VISIT. « Nice hotel but totally overstretched itself . »

This is a lovely hotel but it was very evident that the place had totally overstretched itself. There was a wedding and also private parties in the evening. We had confusion with our evening meal booking and were told that we shouldn’t have been able to book due to the events being held. However, they did honour our meal and it was in fact lovely. Breakfast however was another thing. Very very busy, stressed staff and running out of food. All the conversations around me were about the poor service, running out of food and horrible coffee . Having stayed in a 5 star hotel the previous week in London I was able to make comparisons. I certainly did not expect 5 star service but this hotel did not reach 4 star. I felt really sorry for the staff and it was evident that breakfast on Sunday morning was something to just get through. room was clean and bed was comfortable. Hotel is in a prime position for town. I hope the hotel will learn from the guests experiences as I know I will not be the only one commenting on the weekend.

We asked for a few things prior to our arrival and they were all met, however breakfast on Sunday was how can I put it way below its usual standard, the wait to be seated , the table not ready when we eventually got one, no orange juice, no fruit and the wait for tea and coffee.... We have stayed this time of year for the past several years and the public areas are great, but I felt the rooms are a little tired, but extremely clean

It felt basic. Spending well over £100 a night in a high standard hotel did no deliver. Paying £10 to park is ridiculous, breakfast service was terrible and the actual food unappetising. The pool facilities were poor. It was dirty and needs one TLC. The towels provided are way too small.

Been staying here for a number of years, but just really noticed how grubby everything is from room to restaurant/bar. Shower plug blocked and flooding bathroom, friends said the same. Room not very clean, Towels small and very worn. Bars unattended and seemed under staffed, such a shame with a great position into town.

« breakfast nightmare »

we love the Southgate Hotel but staying there does have it's moments. This time it was Sunday breakfast. we had to queue for 10 minutes or so for a table & were then led to a table that was still to be cleared from the previous guests. fresh fruit ran out,fruit juice ran out.Had to wait for eggs,bacon & sausages to be cooked. Couldn't have dinner at a convenient time as dining room was booked til 9pm for a function. Bath robes' still made to fit 12 year olds. Well you did ask. Southgates saving grace is it's lovely staff. Lovely couple of nights stay at this hotel. Christmas shopping weekend so location was spot on. Rooms clean and comfortable. Mix up with evening meal booked - which usually happens- but sorted quickly and efficiently so all good. Will definitely stay again.

« Great location and facilities, good service, good food. »

We had a short stay to celebrate my wife’s birthday. The location was great for exploring Exeter and the spa facilities were a welcome treat after a day out in the cold weather. The bedroom was large and comfortable. The only downside was that due to the time of year, the dining room was booked out for functions so we were unable to dine in. I had ordered a bottle of champagne when making the booking but it was not delivered to our room and there was nowhere to sit in the bar area so unfortunately we had to forgo the champagne and eat out each evening. That did not stop us enjoying our time in Exeter and the other hotel facilities though. Regarding the car parking, it felt wrong that guests are charged to park their cars when they have already paid a significant amount for their stay.

I have used Accor hotels for many years and have stayed at this hotel a number of times. With this last visit not being to the usual standard we would expect. When we checked in I booked a table for 2 for both evenings. The first evening was very good with excellent service and food but unfortunately the second evening didn’t go so well. We arrived at the restaurant at the time booked 6:30 but was told the restaurant was closed to guests, I explained that we had booked the previous day and could not understand why we were not told the restaurant would be closed. We were then told that we would be transported to the sister hotel where we would be able to have our evening meal. I explained that my wife has coeliac disease and would require a gluten free meal and was assured they could accommodate. On arrival we were taken to the bar as this was the only place available for us to eat. I went to he bar and explained my wife’s dietary needs and the barman took my wife’s dietary card to show the chef and ask what he would be able to offer. The barman returned stating we would have to select food from a food ingredients book as the chef was unable to help. At this point we went to reception and asked to be taken back to our hotel as they were unable to help with my wife’s dietary needs. On our return To our hotel I spoke to the receptionist and explained what had happened and that as it was now to late to find a restaurant outside and that we would not eat and go to bed. Unfortunately this was not the only incident. When we went for breakfast the first morning we explained that my wife has coeliac disease and asked if an omelet could be cooked but was told the kitchen was to busy to do this and was shown gluten free cornflakes and bread which is all my wife was able to eat due to the cross contamination of foods in the self service area where the bacon, sausage, and hash browns etc are in close proximity with the utensils being mixed by other guests so cross contaminating the foods.

I was charged twice for my room which left no money in my bank account, as I am a uni student. I then couldn’t pay for my boyfriends birthday dinner which was humiliating. I still don’t have the money back. Then I was told we could not eat until 9 o’clock as there was some function and evidently those providing less money go straight to the bottom of the pile. Not what i expect from at 4 star.

This was our third November visit, it felt like the hotel was cutting back . No muesli at breakfast, fresh fruit all went as it arrived no croissants. Glasses and bottles left outside rooms untill after 7pm. Don't like disabled bathroom, sink far too low.[not disabled]. Smoke in room from people smoking outside below room and making terrible noise.
