It was a quick gateway with my family. Love the location and the style of the hotel. Breakfast team very nice. However I have sent an email a few days prior to my arrival requesting to have something put in my grandparents and parents rooms to make it special for them and this was not acknowledged. Still have enjoyed my stay very much!

Good location about 5 minutes up to the Cathedral and Central Station (I took a train to Exmouth - very good) and 10 minutes down to the Quay area on the river. Comfortable and good service from hotel and restaurant staff

I've stayed at Southgate many times in the last 4 years and this was the worse room I have ever stayed in. Room 6 is dated and in a desperate need of refurbishment. Your breakfast is also a let down, except the nice coffee machine the quality of cold buffet and hot food is not what it was before. No welcome back drink of members or even bottle of water in the room. Very disappointing.

checked in early, thanx to a lovely receptionist page sing , clean room , nice size, fair price . The boy who cleaned our room was also really lovely and polite and made a swan towel which was a lovely touch

Good location, minor issues with the room

The hotel is in a great location and has the key benefit of offering onsite parking. The accommodation was largely as expected/advertised, but suffered from some annoying glitches which slightly spoiled the impression. The aircon didn’t work although it appeared to be operating correctly according to the display. On mentioning this to staff, they suggested just asking for a fan, which rather missed the point. Some of the light switches didn’t work, the toilet seat was loose and the toilet door had clearly been water damaged and could only be moved with force, very noisily. So, nothing major, but disappointing. The room was clean, the hot water was great, and the staff were very friendly although I was surprised not to be offered a welcome drink as an Accor Silver member. So overall, a good hotel, but with a little more attention to detail it would be even better.

Great reception staff, hotel itself a little tired...

Reception staff throughout our stay were fantastic - kind, helpful and informative. Unfortunately many of us were unimpressed with the state of our rooms for the price paid. One room (160) being exceptionally tired with water stained lampshades and scuffed woodwork. The toilet roll holder was falling out of the wall and there was no hairdryer - even on requesting a replacement, it took 3 hours for this to appear. After being moved from this room and upgraded for the following night, a water leak in the early hours of saturday morning caused the bed to be drenched and the electricity to be cut off. Meaning having to get up at 3am to visit reception to then be moved to a different room. Causing much disruption and loss of sleep. This room was not charged for at check out however, we firmly believe that a refund should also be issued for the inconvenience and as compensation for the awful experience. We would definitely expect a much higher quality accommodation for the prices paid.

You can't beat the location, just around the corner from the Cathedral. The entrance and lobby area of the hotel is highly attractive, and the swim and gym facilities are a great added bonus. The room appeared tired unfortunately, a scuff on the wall was the first thing I noticed as we entered the room and a wonky door in front of the fridge. I had booked a privilege room, expecting it to be a little more updated and new, but it appeared an old room.

I stayed for 2 nights over a weekend. Well located in the centre, an easy 5 minute walk from the cathedral and shops/restaurants yet pleasantly quiet and safe, being down a residential side street so no noisy through traffic or rowdy nightlife. I partly chose it for the hotel’s own parking, directly in front of the entrance lobby as was worried about my car. Room was immaculately tidy although the decor looked rather tired and worn in places. Bed was very comfortable and slept well even with the window slightly open. I went out for meals and drinks so can’t comment on those, or the pool/spa facilities as didn’t use them. Overall pleasant enough if fairly expensive as booked quite late. Would be happy to stay again.

We stayed for 3 nights for my 50th birthday and thought it was very nice. All staff very pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately the sauna wasn’t working and I had booked it for the spa. Also we asked for the safe to be unlocked so we could use it on the afternoon of our arrival and no one came until t he following morning and we were still in bed so thought it quite rude at 8.40 on a Saturday morning. We usually rise early but we were on holiday. Other than that it is as very nice

I have stayed here a lot over the years but my recent stay was somewhat disappointing due to the condition of the room, the table top was loose and hanging off couldn't use it. The lights in the room were either all on or all off, there was mold in the shower. The room was generally tired. The food menu was limited and has the same old same old offerings not much incentive to eating in house.

The maintenance team are working hard to improve all rooms and just this week we have been replacing curtains/nets, some tv's and other electrical appliances which is all based on the valued feedback we receive from our guests so once again - thank you for your comments. The hotel is excellent with clean big room and great pool. Perfect to unwind. Good location for sight seeing and or work in central Exeter. Only concern that on a Sunday night the kitchen couldn't cope with high demand. Understood this as everywhere is recovering from Covid and staffing issues.

Service is below average. No night porter service. Reluctant to print off a bill. Impossible to phone through to the hotel to obtain an email copy of the bill and again reluctant to send. Disappointed.
