Very well looked after with excellent customer service on a family trip

I arrived with my wife and six year old daughter after having booked only about 30 minutes before, on the net, using my phone. As there rooms weren't quite ready, we were served complementary drinks in the bar. What a nice touch. My daughter loved her goody bag. We needed an extra bed in the room. It was set up in just a few minutes. I needed a tooth brush. I was immediately provided with a free one. I got a taxi firm recommendation. When it turned out my morning leaving time at 6.30 am would not leave time for breakfast, a special arrangement was made just for me to have a little bit of breakfast ready at 6.15. Thank you especially to Page Singh on reception who made us feel looked after. At the end of the evening I came back from a lovely stroll to the Cathedral 5 minutes minutes away to find wife and daughter rested after using the swimming pool, enjoying their hotel dinner in the bar. We all felt relaxed by the hotel after our long trip here.

We arrived for a 3 night stay at what we thought was a going to be a lovely hotel. Especially from the video we had seen online. Upon arrival all seemed well, we got checked in after 10 minutes as they couldn’t find the booking. The lobby area is lovely, but then things went downhill very quick. We had 2 rooms booked: Room 1/ room was on the ground floor, it was dirty, the carpets need a damn good cleaning or vacuuming would be a start. The walls in the room were badly stained with drinks being spilt down them, the dusting is to be desired and the bins aren’t emptied regularly. We left the room after the first nights sleep and upon returning the bed hadn’t been made but someone from housekeeping had been in and tidied up. There is a big stain that looks like food matter on the side of the bed, this remained for the 3 nights stay. Carpets hadn’t been backed all the time we were there. Room 2/ this is on the 2nd floor, again similar to the ground floor, the carpets need cleaning thoroughly and vacuuming daily. The bins aren’t emptied daily. The tea and coffees aren’t replenished daily either. The air vent as you walk into the room on the ceiling is full of dust. The paint work around the handles on the wardrobe is flaking. The bottom of the bathroom door on the inside is also flaking and needs painting. The first night we had no shower gel in the bottle and had to request this to be replenished. Walls stained, carpets stained. No bathrobes in the room (we requested these and were told dependant in room type you may not have them) it’s a 4 star hotel, surely they should be standard? When we requested these, we were then told that they had run out of them. The windows will not stay open on there own, you have to wedge them. Corridors, again carpets, walls looks very worn. When we spoke to the manager we were told they are going to have a refurb, but the cost of the nightly charge doesn’t reflect this, your still paying full price. Bar area, the table we were sat at had all food debris on the legs and was a build up over time and not just from the same day. Windows on the internals were very dirty with hand prints and not been cleaned in ages. Car Park, this will cost you an additional £15 per day on top of your room. Swimming Pool, we went to take a look at this before we wanted to use. We were greeted by the young receptionist l, who asked if we were staying at the hotel and we said yes, he then asked us to bring our towels from the room as they had run out of towels. So they had no bathrobes on site and not towels! Now we get to the serious part, on the first night we went to bed at about 23:30, watched some tv and went to sleep about 30-45 mins later. At 00:31 we were woke up by our door being opened via a keycard and a guy walking in and went into the bathroom after turning the light on, we called out and they quickly left the room muttering as they were drunk. We immediately called down to reception to inform them and they said they sent someone up to the corridor but couldn’t see anyone around! We then had to put a chair under the door as we were shattered. The following morning we went to reception to speak about what had happened and was basically fobbed off. They said it was an isolated incident, which we would hope is, but there was no resolution and nothing forthcoming. We then arranged to speak to the Gen Manager the following day and they gave 1 nights free of charge stay. Our concern is for the elderly patrons that they have staying here, as we also had our 84 yr old mother staying and if this had happened to her or any of the other elderly customers staying what the outcome could have been! On a positive, with a refurb looming, this could be such a beautiful hotel. The food is good and reasonably priced along with the drinks. The beds are comfortable as well.

Fabulous welcome on reception after a harrowing journey and great hospitality in the bar. Karris was warm, welcoming and friendly . The room was clean and comfortable and I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants somewhere to stay in Devon while travelling to Cornwall. Fab restaurant and great bar with wide range of products. Lovely swimming pool and gym. Highly recommended

Centrally located hotel

We stayed as Accor members in a standard twin room on the ground floor, overlooking the car park. I should have requested a quieter room but didn’t so I can’t complain. The rooms nearby were full of noisy children but fortunately they were quiet at night. The rooms are not soundproofed. The black out blinds don’t fit close enough to the window so the light comes in early. Whilst a small room, there was enough space for two small suitcases, which was a plus. There’s a safe in the cupboard and a fridge as well as tea & coffee & biscuits and plenty of drawer space. The bathroom was small but has a decent shower but no chair/stool to put clothes on, only the toilet. There were two maintenance issues, one of which was a broken lamp fixture in the bathroom and maintenance was prompt but the part not yet delivered so it was a bit dark. The other issue was the wall flush which leaked on being pressed. Hopefully if staff read my review, it will be fixed as well. Breakfast was included in our deal and was adequate. However the orange juice didn’t taste of oranges, truly awful stuff. The coffee machine didn’t work properly and many pods were wasted as a result, an expensive waste of money for a post pandemic hotel! If managed better, the machine should have been removed. There were pots of coffee and hot milk as well but I think the staff should offer it at the tables as it also is a way of making sure food is not removed from the room. I saw several people taking large amounts of food away with them which is another loss of hotel income. Pauline came to my rescue and made me and hubby a nice coffee from the kitchen which showed initiative, thanks! I waited till around 4pm to have my room cleaned and received the last towels available! It meant we couldn’t have a siesta before our evening outing as we didn’t know when the cleaner was coming. The staff were very helpful on reception both by phone when booking and whilst staying there. Be warned the buses owned by Stagecoach don’t appear to run opposite Wetherspoons pub. If you want to use public transport go to the High street, nine minutes away as there is more choice there. Exeter has a lovely circular river walk very close to the hotel, which is worth doing and there are craft shops and lots of nice restaurants. The Cathedral charges £7.00 pp. entry and £6.00 for concessions but not when there’s a service. The high street is full of shops of every kind. We enjoyed our two day visit at the Mercure and it is very convenient for a short visit or business.

Great stay in Exeter at a base that was close to the centre with parking on site. Very clean with some great staff who were happy to help. Joe at the front desk and Suzy in the bar were both outstanding and made us feel very welcome. Thank you for your help
