Well located and lovely hotel

Lovely hotel but let down by poor communication, staff who do not know the services on offer at the hotel and no late food or drink - expected more for a four star hotel

Not a good as previous stays

The stay was ok with check-in being efficient and easy, though the screens protecting staff do make difficult what they are saying. The room was disappointing, despite a £209 per night B&B rate the room was small for a Privilege King room where previously the same room class was bigger. The room overall also felt "grubby" with hair in the shower and no sign of the room door handles etc being sanitised, factors that further undermined our stay

Apart from location nothing about the room justifies the price

Overall the accommodations were very good. However, the bed was a little harder than I normally like and the room temperature always seemed to warm up too much in the mornings.

Good service at reception and nice welcome and service at breakfast. Plenty of choice at breakfast with freshly cooked eggs. Room very clean and comfortable. Bed looked lumpy but was actually comfortable although suggest time for a new duvet as that had defifinitely seen better days. Room very quiet. We have stayed a the St Paul's a coule of years ago and although still good not as a good as it was, looking a little tired and a few of the public areas need dusting/refreshing but what doesn't after the last year and a half.

Very good location

I would have given 10 but the experience at breakfast was not up to the usual standard. We came down before the 9.30 finish and when we asked for a fried egg we were told “ I have been here since 5.30 and it’s poached or scrambled”. Quite honestly if you are doing poached, which is what we had, it was as easy to do fried. She did suggest if we wanted to complain we were welcome to see somebody. By the time she had said all that she could have fried an egg! Other than that we find it an ideal venue for show at the City Hall. Regards Heather B.

We booked a set of rooms for our wedding. The junior suite was perfect and had amazing views. The room was a good size for having hair and make-up done for the wedding as well as space for the bridesmaids. Victoria from housekeeping was amazingly helpful and brought us extra tea, coffee and glasses to the room. It was one less thing to arrange and she kept checking if we needed anything. On returning to the room after our wedding, she had cleared the room of used glasses etc. I can’t thank her enough. There were a few guys who helped us by bringing our bags to and from the room with trollies. Again they were really helpful and saved so much time. The reception staff were a different story. I asked for early check in, late check out and breakfast pastries to the room. I checked a week in advance and was told that it shouldn’t be an issue but to check the day before check in. I came in to town to double check if these extras were still possible to be told there was no guarantee and I would have to ‘risk it’. I was told I would have to come down to breakfast on the morning of the wedding and take a tray of pastries and drinks for 7 people myself and even then there would be no guarantee we would be able to do that on the morning. Thanks but no thanks. I wasn’t expecting this for free and was ready to pay for room service but no, not possible. Victoria from housekeeping saved the day by bringing extra cups and glasses to the room. I went to M&S to buy pastries and fruit juice instead. Such a shame. I had to ask 4 times for late check out and housekeeping still came to the room 3 times trying to clear us out (even though it was before regular check out). It was not housekeeping’s fault but reception had not noted anything for them. Not sure what else I could have done to ensure late check out. I spoke with reception a week before, a day before, followed by an email and then had to go to reception on the morning of check out to ask again! Other guests in our party were also asked to clear their room when we had arranged late check out for them too. Such a hassle when we’re already busy, stressed and trying to enjoy our wedding. Despite the issues with reception, it was a good stay but not sure I could recommend for special occasions like a wedding.

Lovely staff & spa facilities. Room dated & bed uncomfortable

TripAdvisor rating 3.0/5

eandrews88 14/10/2021 TripAdvisor review

Was a nice stay. The staff were very attentive and when gowns and slippers weren’t in the room as requested they kindly phoned to have them delivered. The standard room was a generous size and had great views onto the winter garden, I wouldn’t bother with upgrading. The room was quite dated, with stains under the vanity table, falling paint, blown hall light and there was excessive mould in the bathroom especially on the shower heads. The bed was extremely uncomfortable leading to two poor nights sleep. Every movement of your partner could be felt and the spring made an awlful squeaking noise. Spa facilities were good I felt. The pool was a nice size although the chlorine was a tad overpowering. The steam & aroma rooms could have been a bit cleaner but it was acceptable. Dinner included in the first night was delicious and staff were attentive, strangely there was no drinks menu and we relied on the memory of our waiter. We opted for inclusive afternoon tea instead of another dinner on the second day. It was satisfactory and filled the gap, nothing outstanding. The breakfast on the first morning was lovely and hot but poorly displayed in steel trays on top of each other, breakfast on the second morning was stone cold but displayed nicely in white crockery, coffee on the second morning was extremely weak. Unless I intend on using the spa facilities I probably wouldn’t stay here again.

Great location, friendly staff, facilities dated & bed uncomfortable

The staff were so friendly and accommodating. The room was a generous size with ample room however the room was in desperate need of tlc. Flaking paint, excessive mould in the bathroom & questionable stains under the vanity table sadly left us feeling the cleaning was not up to a acceptable level. The bed was possibly the worst hotel mattress I have ever experienced and truest belongs in the 00s. It was extremely uncomfortable with every movement from your partner felt throughout the night and the springs made an awlful squeaking sound, we didn’t sleep very well at all.

I booked 7 rooms and everyone seems to have been very happy with their accommodation - my room was fine - had everything I needed & was clean - breakfast was ok, bacon, eggs etc was good but coffee system & taste is archaic by today's standards, the fresh fruit was fizzy when eaten so had obviously been there a few days.

Comfortable spacious room and excellent bathroom. The only reason I haven’t given a 10 is that we had to ask for a television remote three times. When the engineer arrived he had been told the set was not working so he then had to go and fetch a remote. The television was working great afterwards.

Good stay.
