Parking let’s whole experience down

Customer review rating 3.5/5

Robert S. L. Couples - 21/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

I have stayed at the Oxford Eastgate many times prior to Covid - always a fantastic experience. This time however, after being on the road for three hours & looking forward to relaxing in our room, a sign was blocking the car park - NO PARKING. I went to see the receptionist who said “did you book” “no I’ve never needed to book before” I replied. “Well you should have, it’s first come first served” she replied. I explained how upset & frustrated I was to which she gave me the name of the nearest car park, adding another £40 to the cost of our already expensive weekend. “Can I see the manager then please?” I asked ? “He’s not available” was the reply. So I had to then find the car park, pay, & walk back laden down with luggage. When I finally got back to the hotel, 1 1/2 hours after expected, hot, tired & aching, there was still no sign of a manager. Why didn’t Mercure think to warn people that they had built a new annex & that parking was now severely restricted? This left a very bad taste in our mouths & partially ruined our long awaited/ anticipated weekend away. I never got to see any management all weekend - poor!

Generally good but noisy guests

graemehall233 21/09/2021 TripAdvisor review

Generally a good hotel for its price point, and certainly very well located. Unfortunately my stay was spoilt by very loud noisy guests drinking and shouting outside beneath the window to my room until at least 2am. Not directly the hotel's fault perhaps, but I feel that the hotel could perhaps police this sort of behaviour better

Dear graemehall233 Thank you for your review, Please accept my apologies for the noise created by other guests, I will pass on your feedback to the nights team, to be more visual in identified these types of issues. I again apologise for this experience and we hope to better serve you in the near future. Kind regards Bradlee Pillay

It was an “accessible” bathroom, which I hadn’t asked for. This meant the tiniest lowest sink in the world, couldn’t really wash in it. The whole bathroom was a wet room, and bizarre shower. There was no surface to put a wash bag on, just space for a toothbrush. But worst of all, the room smelt like a urinal. It wasn’t so bad after a shower so maybe it is a problem with the drains. The room was ground floor in the annex bit. The door interlocking to another room was unlocked on arrival. And it was awful, I could hear everything from surrounding rooms, including some horrific coughing during the night, two sets of snoring, and everyone waking up and moving around first thing.

Well located, excellent staff.

Thank you we had a lovely stay... to leaving our case at reception before and after check out . Staff were brilliant and courteous. The location being perfect for us sightseeing. Room was spacious, a nice outlook & everything that we needed if not more! Shower was fantastic, Beds were very very comfy. Breakfast room had a wide selection of foods for all tastes i would say.. displayed and well cooked. We enjoyed it very much. We would defiantly book this hotel in Oxford again. What more can i say !

Great location, staff at reception very helpful. Room we were first allocated, air conditioning was not working, reception very quickly arranged an alternative which was very comfortable. Breakfast was very good, everything presented well and hot. Only downside was limited parking as hotel has built on to car park so now only about 8 spaces. We dropped off luggage and parked at a long stay car park.

Overall - pretty good

The hotel is extremely well located for some of the Oxford colleges. The staff are friendly and the room was fine although rather small, but I guess that's reflected in the price which is pretty competitive. Meals were good. Overall, recommended.

A very poor experience overall indeed. From being charged London rates for a tiny dingy room to being unable to get food after 09.30 and other mishaps during the stay, I would recommend that you stay well away as there are far better properties than this at a better price.

Dear petershkurko Please accept my apology for the issue experienced during your stay. I will addressed your feedback with all relevant departments. Please note that this is not the type of service we wish to provide. I once again apologise for this service experienced and it is my hope to better serve you in the near future. Kind Regards Bradlee Pillay

Arrived on time as agreed; room ready and close to parking. Helpful receptionist with car parking. Disappointed with no water plug in a very small basin and no real hot water. Never been to a good hotel before without a toilet roll holder! The scones served for tea were very poor quality and expensive. Breakfast was good and varied. Food was not kept hot. Overall it was a good stay and close to our venue Oriel College.

Very poor value for money

Peter S. Business - 18/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

Very disappointing. London rates for a very small and quite dingy box room with a very small bathroom and the smallest shower I have experienced in over 30 years of business travel. No information on display about the restaurant times and when I asked about eating at 21.40 I was told nothing could be done as the kitchen was closed - not even a sandwich for room service. Went to bed hungry and put the AC on which made a noise like a pneumatic drill so that had to go off and booked an early morning call for 06.15 that never happened and no apology or reason provided. Good job I decided to set the alarm on my phone! Breakfast was okay with a decent choice but by that time the damage had been done - overall a really poor experience at a ridiculous price.

The location of Mercure Eastgate could not have been better. It is a short walk to everything therefore if you are only there a short time you are able to see everything. Everyone at the hotel was very friendly I would definitely go back if I was staying in Oxford again

The room was fine however the service levels,in particular, house keeping (room service) we’re atrocious.I asked for shower gels and clean towels at reception in the morning and they did not arrive before we went out for the day.We we’re also told the room cleaning and beds sheets would not happen unless we requested it,which in Covid times does not seem right. The breakfast was great. It just feels like staff numbers are reduced and therefore service levels but the cost per night has not similarly reduced.

Nice stay. Great location. Bar and resturant staff pleasent and efficient. Reception staff need some work.

Hotel in a good position, did struggle to locate as we weren't sure if we could drive up the High Street at first.

Lovely room, thankful for the air con as the weekend was hotter than we thought it would be, it was a nice surprise to find a fridge. Didn't realize there was a potential to park at the hotel as the information we received said there wasn't a car park, however, the public parking turned out not too far away, and, after an initial confusion we managed to sort out payment and were able to extend without having to visit the car park. The breakfast was lovely, especially the scambled eggs, lovely and creamy.

Great town, excellent staff, top hotel.

Had a wonderful weekend planned starting with a very nice stay at the Oxford Eastgate. Very friendly welcome, good bar and awesome staff. The place is excellent but the people there make it better still.

We have enjoyed staying at the Eastgate many times in the past but this visit was vey disappointing and we may now never return. On the positive side your staff in the Keepers Restsurant were very friendly and helpful but did not fully understand the details of offers your internet service provided (see later) On the negative side the room (number 317 for the benefit of future guests to avoid) was dark, small, noisy (it overlooked the main road and had very inadequate double glazing) , had very small wardrobe, the Nespresso machine lacked cups that fitted, uncomfortable double bed with only three low quality pillows, no room/hotel information and the room and bathroom were not serviced during our two night stay. The room is also on the third floor and the single lift goes only to the 2nd floor except on our last day when it was broken. On arrival the receptionist did not ask if we needed assistance with our luggage. On booking our room we decided to take advantage of your ‘£25 for £30’ dinner deal although the website offered no details of what this meant and when i phoned reception they did not know either. On the night we were offered an option of 4 starters, 4 main courses and 4 desserts. At no point did the staff suggest that there was a more extensive menu we could choose from and our £25 would be deducted from the bill. We would have taken this option once seeing the limited menu for your dinner deal. Actually I think you need to be very careful with this deal because when you look closely at the full menu (which eventually we did after we had eaten) we noticed that many combinations of the items in the fixed menu did not total £30 when selected from the main menu. This is very worrying and I leave it to management to consider this very carefully.
