Letchworth Hall - need to do better

TripAdvisor rating 3.0/5

bryndles 13/10/2021 TripAdvisor review

The location and surrounding grounds are nice, but you quickly see neglect parts of the garden and building, in particular rotten wood and pealing paint work, most notably on the Lytton Restaurant. The Receptionist Kelsey was very pleasant and welcoming and very prompt in assisting when I reported that the room was missing its hairdryer. The room had recently been decorated and was fine, but whoever put the shaving mirror up has never obviously used one. It was no where near the sink so rendered it useless. King size bed was good, but an appropriate size quilt may have helped, quilt hogging between man and wife is bad at the best of times but when it is undersized the battle was constant throughout the night. The bar was ok, a bit slow considering there were few guests, but a lot of cobwebs and dust everywhere. The hotel is tired and needs some major renovation to bring it up to modern standards. We only stayed one night and had eaten out at a local pub so was looking forward to breakfast. I really am not a fussy eater, but oh dear, this has to be the most disappointing breakfast I have ever seen. On my arrival there were no tea cups, orange juice ran out but when it was available it was served in small plastic cups (really?!). There were no sausages, or eggs or toast….it did arrive later but I had already eaten my croissant and to be honest did not look too good anyway. This hotel is not beyond redemption, but it really does need a bit of a telling off and dressing down in order to improve its appearance nd its food quality. Good luck as it could be a very lovely hotel, but when I visit family in the area again I will be staying elsewhere, sorry.

Tired and needs some attention

We stayed for 2 nights, when we checked in the man on reception gave us no information about the facilities or breakfast. When we got to the room wanted to use the spare pillows but they didn't have pillow cases on them. I went to reception to ask for pillow cases and they said they would be delivered to the room but they never came. Breakfast was nice although the fried eggs, scrambled eggs and baked beans all ran out at the same time. When I told the waitress she was rather rude to me in her response. All in all the hotel needs some attention, the decor particularly in the corridors is scruffy and the grounds were full of litter!

Disappointed

Attractive old building and grounds but badly neglected outside. Outside paintwork on entire building in very poor state and window sills rotted and crumbling away. Ivy and creepers not controlled and reaching top of chimneys. Flooded area outside reception not dealt with. Inside mainly in good condition and had clean bright appearance. Inside of old building had huge potential but looked "tired" and appeared empty and under staffed. Obviously blighted due to Covid and events and weddings needed, however no one would make a booking while it looks so uncared for. e.g. we were attending a funeral and the venue was considered for the refreshments but rejected for above reasons. The dining room was pleasant and the food excellent but we were the only guests in the spacious room and the coffee was cold by 8.45am. Seemed like a hotel designed for business meetings and conferences. All the few staff we saw pleasant and helpful. We could not recommend this hotel in its present state.

Looks good in picture but this hotel needs serious investment. It is outdated tired. If you looking just for an overnight stay it’s ok Sunday function on and all other facilities for guests closed ?

We decided to revisit Letchworth Hall where we had our wedding reception 41 years ago, when we had a need for a hotel in this area. We expected the venue to have changed, and of course it has with a very large addition of bedrooms and health centre. The overall impression was that the original buildings looked very tired both internally and externally, with a ‘conservatory’ built since our first stay looking like it is ready to fall down. The furnishings in our room in the new wing (room 66) looked like they would not be out of place in a nursing home, particularly the two chairs which are starting to become threadbare. Our bedroom was directly above a wedding reception and the extremely loud music continued beyond midnight. If you know that you will be hosting a wedding reception I suggest that you place your non- wedding guests well away from the celebrations.

Hotel (particularly the new part) is looking really scruffy. The carpets in my room were worn and dirty. The sink was cracked and poorly repaired. Bed cover was stained and TV was hanging down on a broken wall fitting. Also could not get a coffee in the afternoon until 15:00 when the bar opened. Would not stay again and I have been staying in LHH since the mid 1970's. It is a shadow of its former self which is a great shame.

The hotel is absolutely the worst hotel I have ever stayed in! Mold in the bathroom, carpets that have come up and a trip hazard, food is just disgusting and overpriced! The only good thing is the staff who are clearly trying to do their best Such a shame to let this beautiful hotel fall into this level of disrepair

It was a lovely break but very very disappointed that no restaurant was open. the staff are lovely and in these difficult times, i do understand, but you should remove the sumday dinner and afternoon tea posters from the bar , as this is very misleading. also with the pool . it is a health centre and therefore not inclusive of the hotel, so not what we were expecting.

So run down!!

The hotel is a bit of a mess! It’s falling apart, nothing works, windows look rotten, hand prints on the headboard, cobwebs everywhere, damp and cracks in ceiling, shower all scaled up, bulbs out, no TV working, no hotel guide or info in room, outdoor patios in major need of cleaning. Staff very helpful and doing their best. NOT 4 star!

Overall OK, let down by poor communication

Friday night was lovely, great food in the bar/restaurant.. After a long day Saturday, we decided to revisit the bar for food. There was a wedding on site, but the bar was empty. After going down to hotel bar at 6.30, we tred to order food and was told the chef is busy at the on site wedding so the kitchen isn't open til 7, OK we'll wait, then chef comes in just before 7 and says kitchen won't be up to heat for 15 mins, try to order again at 7.25, told no, wait again.. can we put an order in, but know there will be a wait, again a flat no. OK can you come and tell us when we can order.... Some presumably wedding guests meander in and soon 2 other tables get food, and he still doesn't tell us we can order.... So fed up, we bail, ended up at a lovely Chinese buffet in Letchworth.... A simple explanation that the wedding party orders are backed up in the kitchen or suchlike would have avoided annoying us, and making us go out again for food when we had already planned not to go out again. Or perhaps a tip off that there would be a wedding and this would affect availability of evening meals and we could have made plans accordingly rather than a sudden need to find a suitable restaurant in a town we don't know at prime time on a Saturday night. It was a real disappointment as the on site food is great.

Stayed for a wedding. Beautiful setting but clearly lack of maintenance over lockdown taken it's toll. Peeling paint outside and damp patches in my room on bathroom ceiling were not what I was expecting. Reception staff were excellent but had to multi task and really felt for them when the hotel computer stytem went down as they were unable to check wedding guests in and received a lot of anger for a situation that was not their fault. Lack of bar staff caused a problem for pre wedding drinks as did the lack of actual bar stock. No normal vodka as it has gone to Wedding Reception bar for later!! Most noticeable to myself as I was assisting bridal party when cake, flowers etc arrived was the absence of the wedding planner until most jobs had been done. She was very unhelpful, not there the day before wedding when room was being set up and failed to notice and arrange cleaning of the very dirty glass on the doors through which the bridal party was entering for the ceremony. She was also quite rude in her manner towards wedding guests on a number of occasions. On the positive side the food was good, both at breakfast and for the wedding reception. There is clearly some work required and painting, decorating and cleaning to get this hotel back to a standard meriting it's star rating. The bar prices were high, some drinks unavailable and lack of staff left this service lacking. However the bridal suite and assistance from reception and bar staff the day before wedding made it a memorable preparation experience for the bride. One member of reception staff even found a replacement vase when one of the wedding table centre pieces was accidentally dropped. I am sure that these problem issues will be dealt with and that lockdown has influenced the situation but when it is a wedding for which a lot of money is paid I was disappointed for the bride and groom in the things which could have been done to make their day better.

Our stay was truly wonderful, the breakfast is like no other and the calming environment is evident right from the start. The water feature out front is lovely, and the rooms and facilities are lovely too. The prices are extremely reasonable, you get access to the pool, gym & sauna as a part of your stay and the nearby area is just beautiful.

Very pretty hotel in good location. However, needs lots of maintenance on it. Peeling paint, interior tatty. There were double booked rooms and guests from wedding party had to stay elsewhere. One couple requested travel cot, they never got it. Very short staffed, but the staff there are marvellous. Worked non-stop, however, wedding co-ordinator very stern. With some more staff and some tlc could be very nice hotel.

On arrival the hotel looked slightly rundown and unmaintained. Lovely large grounds and plently of parking. Checking in was fine and the room was clean and tidy and stocked with refreshment supplies. We had a bar meal on the Friday evening (the restaurant was shut) and visited the swimming pool at the Nuffield site next door to the hotel which was a very pleasant experience. Breakfast next morning was hot with plenty of choice. Although procedure was not explained to us on arrival and we had to find things for ourselves. After a day out we went to the bar in the evening to be told at 7pm there was no food available that night, we had not been prewarned of this and would not expect this experience anyhow. Was it because there was a wedding and another function at the hotel? We made a drinks order to be told there was no wine available. That seemed incredulous. The staff seemed unmotivated and tired. I can only assume this comes from hierachy out of the hotel, as they worked long shifts, doing what was necessary but too tired to welcome or talk to guests. I don't think this was their fault, they were genuinely worn out. I had booked two of the same rooms and when I arrived home realised I had been charged differently for them. To sum up I feel the hotel needs some time, rescources and energy put into it to make it the perfect little retreat it could be.

OK for a brief stop over

We stayed one night, arrived around 10pm when it was dark and struggled to find the reception, definite lack of signage in the car park. We had to wait for someone to arrive at reception, no bell to ring etc so we were waiting for a few minutes. There's no information in the hotel or on the website about the spa facilities available and the guy on reception only told us the opening times when we asked. We were told the quickest way to our room was through the doors and up the stairs which did not get us anywhere near our room, it was through many doors and up the stairs and we weren't made aware of the lifts either. The room was comfortable although the spare pillow in the wardrobe was stained and should not have been in a hotel room.
