« Well located for our needs and a good stay with helpful staff but underwhelming. »

The staff were very helpful and pleasant. The inside of the hotel looked tired and in need of renovation with the carpets and the general decor. Our room was comfortable but there were things that have been neglected: there was damage to the bathroom door which we reported, The bathroom extraction did not work, the bathroom ceiling had mildew around the edges, there was no toilet brush to enable you to clean should the need arise, the desk lamp in the main room did not work, the room service phone was not connected although it looked as though it just needed plugging in, the noise from the adjoining corridor every time someone traversed the area or open and shut a door was very noticeable and intrusive. The breakfast was more than adequate and very tasty, the breakfast staff were very helpful and attentive. The bar area was good and the prices ok although we did have to wait several minutes to be served even though the bar was very quiet with only a few people using it. The bed was very comfortable and we both slept very well apart from the occasional noise from the corridor. Extending the booking by a further day was very easy and the staff managed to keep us in the same room.

« Very tired hotel »

Not great! The hotel was tired and needs major refurbishment. The corridors are on sensor lights but they come on after you've walked past so effectively you walk in the dark which is actually quite unnerving, the lighting in the bathroom was so poor I could barely see, light bulbs had gone in my room, windows were stuck open in the corridors, I could feel the springs in the bed, the sheets didn't fit properly, I could hear people in other rooms going to the toilet, my bean chilli consisted of a handful of beans but was mainly the left over peppers and onions presumably from the Chicken, Peppers and Onion meal. On a positive note, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

« Very dated, not suitable for women travelling on won, unhelpful staff, rooms weren't cleaned properly »

The website should state that this hotel is used predominantly by workmen (often groups of them) I am a female working alone so arriving at reception to walk through a group of males was intimidating - then to put on the top floor at the end of the corridor made me feel more vulnerable. I left a bag of opened food next to bin after first night and this was still there when I returned the next day so the room was smelly. The restaurant staff did not have a clue and were most unhelpful - I was told there was only the restaurant menu, then the reception staff said there was a bar lounge menu. when I went into the restaurant they said again they only had one menu yet woman on bar still sat there was a lounge menu. I asked if I could order of the room service menu and eat downstairs as I didn't want to sit in room - I was told even though the food was prepared in same kitchen I would have to eat in my room!!! I will not be returning

« Good Meal and Average stay. »

Stayed two nights. Nice Staff. Very bad sound proofing. Doors banging. Cleaning staff loud in the morning when talking to other guests. Uncomfortable bed (twin pushed together and not well made up) The room was very clean. Bathroom very old and in need of updating. Really enjoyed meal in evening and good value.

« Disappointing »

The staff were very helpful, my room was quiet but smelt of smoke which was a surprise for a non-smoking hotel. The food in the restaurant was OK, but the drinks were very over priced. We used one of the conference rooms and it was very tired, not the right impression for a business meeting. We had pre-booked dinner but this wasn't logged & then we had the issue of sorting out with reception.

« Well located »

Very poor experience with your hotel. Staff very very disinterested with little or no customer service skills. The room was quite nice and the bed was very comfortable. However the shower didn’t work. Night porter to serve drinks after party for residents was extremely rude and put out at having to serve drinks - which wasn’t at an ungodly hour, it was straight after the party had finished in your venue so approximately 12am. Many many unhappy customers who had asked, and then begged him to the open the bar - please note that no one was drunk and disorderly. A really rubbish end to what was a good night.

« Nice hotel although a bit tired »

The car park doesn’t exactly invite you in but the hotel itself was ok, maybe a bit tired looking. Food in the restaurant was good. My room was nice but the bathroom was a bit dingy and the plug hole of the sink was rusty and the bath panel looked like it was ready to be replaced.

« Nice welcome, good breakfast tidy, clean room »

Clean room, attentive staff, does have a noisy lift shaft, however on most occasions when I visit I am not near it but if I was I would ask to move rooms. Bar Food & Breakfast good although plates at breakfast could be warmer

« Clean, Comfortable and Convenient »

The Mercure Hotel, Wigan is a good mid-scale hotel. It is only a few minutes by taxi or a 15 minute walk from Wigan North Western Station. My wife and I stayed between Christmas and the New Year - not the most exciting time in any hotel - but we were warmly welcomed. Check-in ( and check-out) were simplicity itself. Our room was spacious, with an enormous, comfortable bed, a work desk and a spacious bathroom. The shower was great, really exfoliating the skin. My only complaint about the room would be the lack of storage space for clothes. You do have to live out of a suitcase. The breakfast was good with a choice of hot and cold food. We liked the fact that coffee / tea was brought to the table rather than having to queue at a machine. The only reason I haven't scored excellent for the hotel is that we were informed, on arrival, that the restaurant was closed for the duration of our stay and having read some reviews, we were looking forward to eating there. In the event, not knowing Wigan at all and not having a car, we were reduced to eating in Wetherspoons! Hopefully, should we need to visit Wigan again we will be able to enjoy the meals others have made positive comments about.

We've stayed at this hotel previously, so we knew what to expect. The room was ready a half hour early, so that's always a nice bonus. The room was just fine, as expected, as previous, I requested a quiet room so we were well away from the lift. Breakfast was available until 10am which is nice, being on a leisure mini break, so, no rush, I always like that at this hotel (knowing from previous visits) you can request fried eggs which are cooked to order (didn't spot this information on a notice this time). We arrived for breakfast just before 9.30am, but it definitely felt like it was the end of service, there was just us in the dining area and we had a table tucked in an awkward corner where you can hardly pull your chair out due to the awkward angle of the dividing panelling, so my husband sat on an angle to the table. There were just 4 pieces of bacon left for us both, (so just 2 apiece on the all you can eat breakfast) the toast machine was switched off well before we had finished, (maybe we could have been told, "we're ending breakfast service, if you would like anymore toast/anything else, before discovering it had been taken away and was no longer available). Overall we dont take long, we're no trouble, we just take whatever's on offer, we don't complain, we didn't pay a great deal for it, so....... Breakfast was acceptable! But it wasn't as enjoyable as on previous occasions.
