Not a pleasant experience. Tired rooms. Stains on carpet. Stains on walls. Broken radiator on full heat during night on a warm day! Toilet not flushing. Tiles in bathroom loose. Litter in corridors. Doors constantly banging at all hours. Hotel used as a refugee centre which we were not notified of at any point.

Noisy and no disabled access

Turned up on our wedding night to find one person on the desk and no help with our bags, i am registered disabled so this was very disappointing, room was nice but only facilities for one cup of tea each and there was still water in the kettle from previous occupants use. Lots of noise from other room or rooms so not much sleep. In the morning, Walked the bags to the stairs and still no one around to help with bags, disabled stairlift again not working and my wife had to walk up the stairs and get the very nice girl from reception to come down and help and that young lady is the only reason this awful hotel got a 4 rating. Looking forward to a response as to why you treat your disabled customers so shabbily and expect anymore of my communities patronage , Shame on you, and yes I would prefer that you publish my comments as they will be public anyway once I spread the word to stay away from this hotel.

Checking in was fine no issues, but as soon as we got into our room (after a being a very hot day) we felt the heat that was stored inside the room. We opened the windows but that was no help, then went to get the fan in the wardrobe, picked it up and the front element dropped straight off. Then plugged the fan in and it didn't even work. Contacted reception straight away and they said they would try and find one (6:30pm). We then sat in the hallway for about 20 minutes while waiting as the room was unbearable at that point. After waiting we went to reception to try and see if there was any luck and she said yes they're just looking. So we went back in the room and sat by the windows thinking they wouldn't be long. We went to reception again at to see if there was any luck as it had now been over 2 hours of waiting and still didn't have a fan. Decided to go to the pool just before it closed to try and cool down. But that was filled with loads of kids running and playing around inside so we went back to the room and just sat sleep on the floor watching tv as it was the coolest part of the room. It was at 10:20pm we finally got a knock on the door of someone delivering a fan. So the whole evening was just very unpleasant. However waking up and going to the pool in the morning was great, breakfast was great so that saved the trip a little. Just the lack of urgency for the fan whilst we were so warm, just made us feel like we weren't a priority or even a concern after such a hot day (September 8th - 29/30ºC).

Arrived on Tuesday 31st August as our daughter was having a major operation at the Royal Orthopedic Hospital in Stanmore. We live in Crowborough East Sussex and the drive to and from the Hospital for us was horrendous so we chose a hotel near the hospital to make it easier to visit once she had had the operation. We knew we were not allowed to see her but she knew that we were close just in case. First impression was that the hotel was tired looking. However, it was the number of Afganistan Refugees which made our stay unpleasant. They need solace and help for that I understand but PLEASE close the hotel to other paying guests and just accept the refugees. They were everywhere and at night the children were allowed to run up and down our corridor which kept us awake. We did complain about this to reception. As it happened we needed to stay another night but I was so depressed staying in your hotel we found somewhere else for the last night (The Doubletree by Hilton) down the road which turned our to be cheaper than your hotel!

Very disappointed I was not told in advance that the hotel was accommodating refugees. Whilst I sympathise with the terrible ordeal they are facing, I should have been made aware of this. We booked 4 rooms for a family wedding and felt let down by the level of service and cleanliness, with the bar closing at 10pm and food on the floor in the corridors. We have stayed at this hotel many times and I even worked there back in the day as a teenager so have fond memories, but sadly will not be staying again.

There was a horrendous smell coming from the drain in the shower which then caused the whole bathroom to smell. The room was really dark and dingy and smelt like ash. As you walk around the hotel it was dirty & rubbish on the floor. The swimming area wasn’t that clean either.

Horrendous Weekend

Room tiny and carpets filthy, no one had tried to disguise the severe brown staining on the filthy carpets. Bathroom tired and cramped. Booked dinner to be told no restaurant Bar Food only, Food was burnt inedible. Breakfast a free for all with a Afghan refugee children everywhere touching and lifting Food with their fingers . No Covid procedures in place at all . We didn't stay a second night we checked out of this hotel, as my husband has cancer and the lack of Covid procedures and cleanliness in this hotel could put his life at risk.

Called the hotel to check reservation - long wait no reply so emailed and got a prompt reply. At check in asked if need to book for evening meal as part of the price - was told NO - but when went to place told had to book in advance - luckily it was not very busy so got a table. On the positive - had halal chicken sausages for breakfast which was a first.

Worst stay for my anniversary

Dear max ball, For my 5th anniversary I booked all mercure hotels thinking I would get an outstanding service and really enjoy myself however it was the total opposite. You offer quality & best price guarantee but I did not get that from any of your sites! I have signed up to the membership however realised I get better deals with booking.com through their loyalty program so best price guarantee was not true. I thought the quality of mercure would be of high standard but as soon as I entered London Watford and saw groups of people standing outside looking lost & sitting on floors taking over most of the reception area I knew straight away this was not the stay we had hoped for! It seemed like it was the emergency hotel straight off the airport for anyone rather than a pleasuring leisure stay we had hoped for! We got to our room without there being any lift available with a lot of luggage this was disappointing & a struggle as it says 4 star hotel so you would expect it. Our neighbours and whole floor were so loud and the behaviour was shocking & unacceptable however no one seemed to care and allowed this to happen. We never got a good night sleep because you could hear children screaming & running up and down the hallway we was near the door so we heard the door slam so many times! It was very annoying! When we entered the room the first impressions were not the best, sofa bed was a mess all out seemed broken and the toilet flush was not working correctly when I informed the reception I was told we couldn’t change the room & someone will have a look at it. When the housekeeping arrived the sofa bed was done correctly and the flush was just ignored. She said it’s normal here to flush multiple times it doesn’t work quickly and takes some more time! We had no choice but to deal with the mess of a room as we had an 6 hours drive from Newcastle and this was the last thing we could be bothered with or needed on a special day for us when we had other plans! The bedroom & bathroom had such a bad smell and it was an old room nothing like what it promotes online! I have stayed at way better hotels and some have been even a 3 star hotel! The staff were not friendly and welcoming. Came across like they were having a bad day work. Not enough staff to help at the front which caused delays for the plans we had. we even got woken up earlier on check out day from housekeeping because it wasn’t informed to them about our late check out request. we woke up to find we are not able to get a late check out anymore as promised from the night staff. This is appalling and I’m embarrassed to have spent my special anniversary in mercure hotels! I would like to receive compensation for my stay! The hotel is old and needs some work but needs to be cleaned most of all. Your barman thinks he owns the place and I did overhear a Complaint from one of the girls that works there to her manager about his behaviour and the manager said don't worry he was just messing around? I think that was wrong. The shower has so much hair it takes for ever to drain and everyone complained how hot the rooms were we did not sleep the first night. The breakfast was good but I was sitting next to the window and it was disgusting between the glass in the window. I stopped eating. Mold, dead bugs, just disgusting. I am a Google reviewer and will go in to more detail when I write my review there with pictures.

Other than the guy on reception when I checked in who was very helpful, there’s not a lot of positives. The hotel is very tired, although my room had the label on the door indicating it had been cleaned it wasn’t as clean as it should have been. It’s in serious need of refurbishment.
