Nice hotel with nice but not focused stuff. Issues on regular basis. And the biggest let down is a breakfast - the worst we ever had in any hotel worldwide.

Location excellent, staff could not do enough to make you feel welcome . Only observation and it is not a complaint is, if rooms are only serviced after 2 days it would be good to put in an extra bin or bag for the rubbish.

Having originally booked our stay as a birthday treat for my partner in April and then having to re schedule due to the covid lockdown. We were a little upset at the hotel manager not wanting to honour our original booking in full, on a subsequent date of which we were flexible in the future. We were told that we would have to pay a supplement for our original room and extra for breakfast. After negotiating, we managed to obtain a breakfast within our original deal, but the room we booked we were told would still incur a supplement. On our day of travel we noticed that our original room was still available on the hotel website, so we enquired with the manager if he could honour the original booking, only to be told that we would still have to pay extra for the room we had booked. Anyway we had to except this as we did not want to spoil our stay. On arrival, to our surprise we were put in one of the rooms we originally booked. We could not understand why the manager could not have been more accommodating at the outset.

Off to a good start when check-in at reception with Jessica was a pleasant, problem free experience. The hotel staff had obviously worked very hard to keep all necessary Covid routines unfussy and thus easily understood for the safety of guests. Mercure Hotel Brighton obviously used great forethought and imagination to find ways of ensuring the highest level of comfort and enjoyment possible and so overcome many potential restrictions faced in this difficult time.

Disappointing welcome

You've walked past two track and trace signs and not scanned! Please do this immediately! - this was the welcome received at the brighton sea front hotel. Paper were shoved under our noses as the manager proceeded to outline all the rules. Without taking a breath my in laws (who are not tech savvy) were forced to download the app there and then. We were all completely shell shocked by the experience and still hadn't received the familiar pleasantries you expect when checking in to a hotel. Of course we all want to stay safe and make sure we follow the rules but the approach was completely unacceptable. The leisure and tourism industry has been hit hard by the pandemic and whilst I know things have to change, all efforts should be made to deliver an exceptional customer experience during these hard times.

Great first impression on the reception area and the check in set-up seemed to be smooth. The two staff members behind the desk came across as though they had every inch of life and personality sucked away from them and gave me the most bizarre look when I asked the contents of the vegetarian breakfast and an further unhelpful response ‘everything a full English has but no meat’. What does this even mean?!? We live amongst a food culture, and the arrival of cheese and spice on a ‘veggie’ breakfast plate is near to the norm now......I needed to check there was no classic halloumi substitute due to allergies but when asking this I again received a confused and vacant look. We went on to check into our room, good size, sea view as booked, clean and tidy. The decor of the room didn’t match what seemed promising downstairs, there was chipped black wood furniture and a coffee machine pushed in the corner but no items to use with it....that would have been too accommodating. Although there were 2 bottles of water but having 2 glasses alongside it would have been a stretch if hospitality too far.

The hotel was perfectly situated along the promenade and within easy walking distance of the attractions on the seafront and the shops and restaurants of the Lanes and City centre. The hotel room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel was well organised to deal with the safety requirements necessitated by the Covid pandemic. Great service and friendly staff.

This was a very pleasant stay. Staff were friendly and efficient, Covid restrictions were clear and sensible. Room was clean and comfortable. Location is great. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed but I tried something from the In-Room dining menu and it had was delicious (and delivered in cartons take-away style to my room door so as to maintain social distancing). All in all everything was great.

Some positives, some negatives. Positives - Decent upgraded room, nice bar area, good decor in main lobby, early check in was useful, friendly and helpful bar staff Negatives - Given room with only faulty radiator (confirmed by handyman), then heard someone in the bar charge drink to the same room that evening so had obviously been given the room with the faulty radiator. Car parking charges extortionate. Message about it being our wedding anniversary fell on deaf ears! Pretty uninspiring customer service, a bit more enthusiasm.

Wo booked a privilege room and stayed in a joke. No coffee machine,no hair dryer ,disabled shower which was leaking and broken, no robes slippers or toiletries, room next to fire doors which slammed all night. Took lots of pictures to share on social media. Tried to complain. But was told it was a privilege room which is a joke. Didn't have it on the door because it isn't. Anyone can make a mistake but don't lie to your customer when you have let them down. Our 30th anniversary was totally ruined by this hotel and its staff lying to cover up they didn't have a privilege room which we booked and payed for
