one night stay due to a family celebration in Burton on Trent. Competitive rates for both the family room and the double room, although we found twin beds and not a double in our room. Good value for money and ideal location on the edge of Burton

Appalling and not Covid safe at all!!

I am just emailing to report an appalling stay at Mercure Burton-on-Trent. Using an Activity Superstore voucher gifted to us by my Mum two years ago (pre-Covid), my boyfriend and I booked a 2-night break at Mercure Burton, which was a complete disaster. On checking in, we had to move rooms three times due to totally unacceptable cleanliness standards (especially in Covid times but disgusting regardless!), including dirty cups, unclean and mould-ridden bathroom, damp dripping down the walls, musty/urine smell, etc and were eventually shown a room where I could at least close my eyes without worrying about catching something but that still had serious cleanliness issues and a toilet you had to sit sideways on and that didn't flush. We only settled for this room as it was 10pm by this point and we had been refused a refund by a very frosty and unprofessional receptionist and didn't want to drive home so late. Unsurprisingly, we checked out a day early after a sleepless night in a dingy room and on complaining in the morning were told that the hotel was closing down the next day, a detail completely undisclosed to us prior to our stay. This explained the dire state of the hotel but I can't believe that the hotel was still taking bookings knowing this, putting our health at serious risk by allowing us to stay in a filthy hotel during a global pandemic that has killed millions of people - totally unacceptable, especially as a high-risk individual with severe asthma!! The guy on reception said he would be in touch with options on what he can offer us as compensation for our terrible experience but has yet to contact us and we need answers from someone and a refund/voucher for another hotel stay. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer in response to this unfortunate event.

I used to work in this hotel in the mid to late 90's and standard were exceptionally high in those days. Not any more, i could not believe how bad the hotel has become. Whilst the rooms were clean and comfortable and as one would expect, the same could not be said for the rest of the hotel. The garden area is scruffy and slightly unkept, the staff whilst helpful really were a let down and not really interested in what they were doing, more interested in their phones than the guest. We did eat on one occasion from the only menu the hotel has, very poor menu and quiet obviously all frozen food with nothing cooked fresh, such a shame, that said it was acceptable.

Idyllic location for quiet getaway

We stayed for one night and had two rooms. The hotel is tired in some places but our rooms looked newly decorated.
