Not so GRAND Mecure

We did a short trip to see Magnetic Island and stayed at the Grand Mecure. I must say that it is not so grand and definitely not what we were expecting as this hotel is definately in need of an upgrade! The Mecure' position was good and we had a nice view, but I wouldn't stay here again!

Thank you for your feedback Susan We definately do have a premium position with magnificent viewws to the Coral Sea. Many whale sightings lately which has been a fabulous bonus for our guests. The apartments are always being upgraded in keeping with owners requests, sorry you were not happy.

Not worth the money

I can only speak on my experience, and comment based on standards I have come to expect from staying in numerous hotels (Particuarly Accor brands), and also from my training and career working in hospitality. From the get go I was a bit apprehensive about this place. Dealing with Mel on the phone, I was told she ‘would get to my booking when she got through all the other requests' she had received. The guest doesn't need to know how busy you are. Instead, just tell me you will get to it as soon as you can. Things should look effortless to a guest. A few days before arriving, I called to amend another booking. When Mel picked up the phone I was told I would be called back because 'I am busy checking the cleaning has been completed in the rooms', whilst I could hear impatient tapping in the background. Again - I don't need to know how busy you are - Just advise you are with a client and will call me back. Based on that phone call, I decided to read some reviews about the hotel, which is when red flags started to pop up. There are pretty consistent comments on uncleanliness and rude reception staff. The rudeness was made very clear looking at some of the hotel owners response to reviews. To say I was shocked that a hotel was unprofessional enough to sass back at guest reviews would be an understatement (goodness knows what they will say about this review). Anyways, the day came to check in. Unfortunately my worries were confirmed. I shared a two bedroom apartment with a colleague. Both myself and a colleague had to wipe down everything with antibacterial wipes, as you could see streaks on the kitchen bench, and fingerprints on switches. Based on that, we just ended up wiping all the common touch areas, just to be safe. Our bed sheets had stains on them (see photos). I don't know if it was blood or red dirt. Either way we slept on what appeared clean, or put towels down (we didn't dare ask for clean sheets). The light and ceiling fan in my room didn't work - yes I know how to operate both. When you are only presented with 2 switches in the room, it is pretty easy to work out how to turn both of them on (see previous reviews where the hotel owners clapped back that the guest didn't know how to operate a fan). The bedrooms at the back of the apartments, that back onto the carpark, and have non-sound proof louvers, do not block out any noise. So if you want a good nights sleep without hearing other guests, don't stay here. No bath mat, hand towel or face washer. Just one bath towel per person - for a 4 night stay. Ew. Dust was evident on the bed side table and wall (see photo). Back of kitchen chair was broken - see photo. Not confident the floor had been cleaned as there was very obvious gum on the floor right next to the glass sliding door (see photo) - again, something we cleaned up instead of 'troubling' reception. It just kept going, and we had to put up with the place for 4 nights. So, if you are thinking of staying here, take into account some pretty consistent reviews on how clean this place is. And look at the unprofessional responses from the owners. The place isn't worth the money. And the location against the sea is definetly starting to show with rusting ballistrades on the balcony. This place just doesn't live up to an Accor brand. Stay at Peppers instead. The extra money is worth it.

Great views on an awesome island

We were on Magnetic Island for a friend’s birthday party, stayed for over a week in room 1205. We had a view of the marina and ferries. Lovely vibe to the place. The team that manages the property is excellent! Led by Rick, Rita and Mel, they keep the property clean and very functional. A couple of things that unfortunately is part of the infrastructure and which the team cannot change, would be the bathroom/shower. Climbing in and out of the bathtub to shower is not suitable for elderly guests and it should be highlighted in the description of the room. Good experience overall! Many thanks guys.

dear Niwajiri thank you for your review. we agree with you the shower over the bath is a little outdated but the room on the whole is an open styled apartment. we are glad you had a great time celebrating your friends birthday and we look forward to your return to the island maybe call direct and we can accommodate your requests better to enjoy an even greater experience

Do not waste your time or money on this outdated and under maintained version of Faulty Tower's. Unit stank of damp, some cupboard doors were broken away from the hinges, the towel rack fell on the floor on the first attempt to put towels on it. No internet connection or Foxtel and very limited tv channels. We will definitely holiday again on Magnetic Island but it will not be at this venue even if it was free of charge.

Dear Mr McCormack Thank you for your review. We always welcome our guests reviews as they are a good indicator of what those most important to us "our guests" expect for a wonderful stay. Unfortunately this is not the case with your review. When a guest damages an item in an apartment it is normal practice for the guest to be billed for the replacement of that item. As you are well aware that is what has taken place. It does not help when the guest threatens management with a bad review should they do what is the right thing. Once again, we thank you for stay.

Beware- Very Disappointing Experience

We stayed for 9 nights in a one bedroom apartment at the Grand Mecure Bright Point Magnetic Island. We had travelled to Townsville for a family wedding so we’re hoping to relax and enjoy beautiful accommodation on the island after not travelling for so long. The location of the apartments near the ferry terminal is great. However we were extremely disappointed in the state of our apartment (make sure you are not allocated apartment 2205). It was grubby and run down. The sofa was stained. The kitchen was so grimy we never used it. There was no wifi. We had to carefully climb in and out of the bath to shower. We found this quite dangerous as my husband had a shoulder injury. We were told they were fully booked so no chance of changing apartments. What seems to be the case is that these apartments are individually owned so it can be pot luck what you actually get. Many may be quite OK but we paid $390 per night for accommodation that would not be more than 2 star. We will never book with the Mecure Brand again. Overall we felt ‘ripped off’. .

Jenny Thank you for your review, we appreciate all feedback. The apartment you claim to have stayed in is a modern, clean and very well located 1 bedroom apartment. The shower is located in the bath as are all our 1 bedroom apartments, something that you would have been advised at time of booking. With respect to a grimy kitchen, all apartments are checked prior to guest arrivals and this most definitely was not the case. The apartment is a modern well furnished 1 bedroom apartment in keeping with standards. If I may be so bold as to suggest, next time you visit, perhaps try "relaxing and enjoying".
