Not a good night's sleep due to noise

The standard room was pleasant and clean but, as a double, lacked storage space: only one single wardrobe and no draws. One of the 2 small shelves in the wardrobe was taken up by a safe, which would be fine if there had been other shelves or draws. My wife and I stayed for a Society Dinner on a Saturday night. Darlington has changed a lot since I knew it in the 1960s and 70s. It now seems to cater for outdoor entertainment, loud music and far too much alcohol. We had very little sleep as the Mercure Kings Hotel has a 24hr reception so noisy, some clearly the worse for wear revellers, mostly female but a few males made a lot of noise on their return in our corridor, almost continuously until after 3am. We decided to give breakfast a miss and checked out at 0730. The Society Dinner was excellent with very good food served very professionally, which it had been on previous occasions. We had stayed at the Premier Inn about 10 minutes walk away from the Mercure on the previous occasions. Strangely, our room had the most odd laminated MDF structure taking up far too much space at the end of the bed merely to house a TV; quite bizzare! Sorry Mercure but we shall not be staying in this hotel again, I'm afraid. Also there was no soap either as a bar or in a wall dispenser in the room. The shampoo sufficed though!

An excellent base for exploring northern North Yorkshire, the Tees and Wear Valleys and other parts of historic County Durham. Very friendly welcome and service, survived Covid well. All homely comforts and rebuilding its previous high standards.

Arrived to not a particularly genuine welcome. Allocated a very small room. "ring reception if you need anything" but witnessed the phone ring several times but not answered. Tried the welcome drink but short of beer. Restaurant closed because they had two groups staying so only bar food available. Not offered the option of having breakfast in the morning. Felt to be an unwanted guest!

I've travelled to Darlington for business purposes and I have received a room facing the road, where till midnight you can hear the cars and road noise and at 5AM they collected the recyclable glass. I work long days and we need a good night sleep to keep in good shape. I gave this feedback to reception. Will see how my next stay will be.

In general an average stay. Good location but noise during early morning from local pigions and staff in corridors was not welcome. Serving staff in bar for evening meal and breakfast service were inexperienced but reception staff were more organised. It could of been better.

Our second visit so we knew what to expect. Pleasantly surprised by an upgrade to a Privelige room. Not so many staying on this visit so the cooked part of breakfast was made to order - all good.

Kindness at Christmas

We arrived unexpectedly at The Kings hotel on the night of the 23rd Dec. after discovering the self catering accommodation we had booked for Christmas was cold and dirty. We ending up staying until 26th. The welcome we received puts the Owner and the booking company of the self catering accommodation to shame …neither have yet responded beyond ‘sorry for the inconvenience’’. In sharp contrast the Kings staff went out of their way to welcome us as guests and make us comfortable, They showed a genuine interest in all their guests and ensured that we had everything needed This including a personally written Christmas card and a plateful of mini mince pies per a room. The Rooms were warm, clean and very comfortable. The breakfast was delicious with hot food cooked to order. In addition the hotel was decorated beautifully for Christmas. The hotel pays very careful attention to the extra and important requirements needed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. This Hotel team’s wonderful kindness and generosity was a example of the true Spirit of Christmas and blessed our Christmas. Many thanks.
