Handy for city centre

TripAdvisor rating 4.0/5

AF207 TripAdvisor review

We stayed 4 nights for the Commonwealth Games. Car parking was in the underground car park below the hotel, and whilst £13 per 24 hours, it meant we had no worries about where to securely park the car in the busy city centre. Note: the car park entrance is in Fleet Street. The hotel's location is very handy for Victoria Square, less than a 5 minute walk away. Reception were friendly and helpful. Our room overlooked Lionel Street and it was very quiet. Bed was comfy. The self-serve breakfast was nothing to get excited about: breakfast cereal, yoghurt, some fruit, bacon, scrambled egg, and sausages, a little ham and processed cheese, a few pastries, toast. But is was sufficient. What we did like very much was the availability of free tea/coffee/hot chocolate from the machine at reception, which we made use of each evening after returning late from one of the sporting events.

Central. Clean Comfortable room and great staff

Stayed here whilst attending the Commonwealth Games. Hotel was full but they had lots of great helpful staff so never needed to queue. Room was clean. Bed was comfortable. Tea and Coffee in the room and a free area at reception for 24 hour tea and coffee. Breakfast was fine. Hotel bar open until 2am. Hotel was really central. Much better than I was expecting which is also good.

We stayed here as a family during the Commonwealth games and were more than happy with the hotel. We stayed in a family room with a sofa bed made up for the children - perfect size for two toddlers but might be a squeeze for two older children. The room was clean, tidy and had everything we needed. The location is perfect and within walking distance to the City centre. Lovely walk along the canal to Brindley Place and Sealife Centre. The hotel has its own underground car park which is a real bonus priced at £13 per night. Follow the one way system round to the rear of the hotel and you'll see the entrance. The hotel was full to capacity but still plenty of spaces. Tea and coffee facilities in the room, but we used the free drinks vending machine in reception instead. Good selection of drinks and available 24 hours. We added breakfast on the last morning and it was £9 per adult, children free. Good selection of cooked breakfast, cereals, continental. Overall a great stay and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if we came to Birmingham again.

I stayed for the week of the Commonwealth Games so the Hotel was full. However in that time only 1 lift out of 3 was available to service the bedroom floors. I stayed in two rooms as the first was on the 4th floor and had a musty smell when we arrived but as I was going out immediately I did do anything about it. I reported it the next day as it seemed that the bathroom extractor fan wasn't working and the windows don't open. Eventually I was told that the power to the extractor was going out across the whole floor and needed to be reset every day! If that was the case I'm surprised there didn't seem to be more complaints. After chasing this for a couple of days we were moved to a room on the 6th floor which didn't smell and was perfectly acceptable for a hotel of this type. Though moving to the top floor did exacerbate the poor lift service. Otherwise the service and hotel were of its type and it was conveniently placed being only a short walk from Victoria Square.
