Genuinely disappointed. This place needs an upgrade and a big modernisation effort, as well as making sure the staff who manage the cleanliness of the rooms are switched with people who care. When we arrived we were given a room that I can honestly say just smelt of 💩. There was absolutely no way we were going to stay in that room. Thankfully, we were switched to another room. The new room smelt of blackcurrant, which by the following morning we had realised it was just an incredibly damp smelling room. There were no items in the mini bar, no bathrobes or shower cap, water and the biscuits/tea etc weren’t always replaced. The air con/heating in the room just didn’t work either, this seems to be a really common theme across the reviews but obviously the owner has absolutely zero care to resolve. I would think that resolving this would also help to fix the horrid damp across multiple rooms in the hotel.

Good hotel for a city break

We really enjoyed our stay here. We came as a couple (group of 6 in total over 3 rooms) for 2 nights for the Christmas markets. Our first time in Edinburgh and it was a nice hotel. Nice bar / sitting area downstairs too. It’s a bit of a walk into the centre (about 20 mins) but a quick Uber and taxis are very fast. It was clean and nice white bed clothes. Really don’t see what others are complaining about as we all enjoyed it over our 3 different rooms. Would go back.

Fawlty Towers without the entertainment.

Booked this hotel because it sold itself as more than just the standard budget hotel but we were really disappointed at the poor condition of the room, its small size, the warm/cold cooked breakfast food and the poor value for money as we spent £350 approx on the booking. Don't bother paying for the upgrade when booking, the bath robes were not in our room on arrival and we had to ask for them, they were quite washed out and long past being fluffy and comfortable. The newspaper never materialised on both days, the soft drinks were 3 drinks that weren't refilled on day 2 and the upgraded toiletries were nothing special. So the room was very small with no space to unpack a suitcase. The toilet door is sliding when working so little privacy. Our toilet door was broken so didn't move at all. We asked for it to be fixed, it was then partially fixed so it slid but the bottom was not on its runner so it moved outward, quite dangerous. The toilet door handle fell off when touched. The toilet extract fan didn't work. The toilet ceiling had mould on it. The room was damp when we arrived, condensation every where, cushions and carpet were very damp and window was streaming. Air con did not work throughout stay. Hot food at breakfast not hot. My suspicion is that the hotel owners are cost cutting and so it's a race to the bottom with no repairs, staffing issues as our room wasn't ready at 4pm and energy cutting measures. Only saving grace was central location. We complained twice during stay , first time we got a plug in radiator and the bits missing from our booking and second time we had no feedback from hotel staff. We emailed to ask for a partial refund but received an offer of a future 'competitive' rate. Advice to all thinking of staying - save your money and go else where.

My plush toys did not like it! 10 year old.

I went to Edinburgh with my Mummy and Daddy for a special Xmas trip to visit the Dr Who exhibition at the Scottish National Museum. I saw it when I was on a school trip and wanted to go. I wanted the hotel to be nice warm and comfy but it wasn't like that. The room was really cold and felt damp when I walked in. There was loads of water on the window ledge and the window. The room was tiny, really small and when I used the toilet the door wouldn't close. Dad said it was broken. We got a radiator to make the room a bit warmer and left the window open on the second day to dry out the place. Breakfast was okay but the sausages were quite cold. I don't want to come back to this hotel as it wasn't great.

Avoid at all costs.

I will start off with the positives of this hotel: 1/ Central location means the city attractions are in walking distance. That's that out of the way. We booked a family weekend in Edinburgh and chose this hotel as we thought it offered a little extra than the budget hotels. We paid approx £350 for 2 nights including a Prestige upgrade which included bath robes newspaper daily and drinks in the fridge. (The drinks were 1 can of coke 1 can of lemonade and a bottle of spring water) So what did we find: 1/ The rooms are very small. Really small. 2/ There is little space to unpack and few shelves or drawers 3/ The toilet doors are sliding doors and offer little privacy. That's the moderately good bits. What did we experience: We checked in at approx 4pm on the Saturday and found the room was in a poor condition with the following issues: 1/ The most concerning issue was the dampness or moisture in the room which I believe was the result of the room not being aired properly and possibly linked to air con issues. The window was streaming with condensation, the cushions on the bed were damp to the touch and the carpet was damp. When we walked on the carpet bare foot our feet were picking up dirt from surface because it was damp. We fixed the issue on the second night by leaving the window open all day and the small radiator on. 2/ The air conditioning was clearly not working correctly. When we arrived the air con was set to 29 degrees centigrade. The system would never cope with this temp and this was probably set by the previous occupants when trying to get the heating working. We spoke to reception straight away and the staff member was helpful with an oil heater that we had seen on arrival in the corridor. The air con did not work properly throughout the stay. 3/ The toilet sliding door was broken and would not slide. This was partially fixed the first night but the bottom of the door was not secured to the ground and was quite dangerous. See attached photo. 4/ The toilet door lock was broken and the handle fell of when touched. See attached photo. 5/ The items that we were expecting to be in the room and which we paid for were not present e.g. bath robes. We had to ask for the bath robes. We believe there was a newspaper in the booking reservation but we did not receive a paper on either day. 6/ The bathroom extractor fan did not work and there was damp on the bathroom ceiling. See attached photo. 7/ The continental breakfast was good but the hot food was luke warm at best cold at worst. The electric Bain Marie's were not working or were not set to high enough temperatures to keep the food at a safe temperature. We avoided the cooked food on the second morning. 8/ In the main the staff were excellent and helpful but on the Sunday morning I spoke to reception about the issues and possibly moving rooms. The receptionist said that our bags would need to be packed to move rooms but we were due at the Museum at 10.30 so didn't have time to pack. However I wrote my mobile number down and asked to be called if we could move rooms and I would return to pack. You guessed it, no phone call or contact was made by reception at any point. We wrote an email to the hotel after our stay to ask for a partial refund . We received a reply apologising and offering a future competitive rate but no compensation. Next time we will stick to Premier Lodge and save the money.
