I wrote an complaint letter to Fairmont/Accor (website contact template) and so far no feedback. This is the letter: For my first time I stayed 2 nights in the Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai. Regarding the definition it’s a 5star luxury Hotel. It was a incredible unforgettable stay but in a negative way. To make a it short and clear what made me feel very uncomfortable: - in the 2 nights I stayed with my partner in this hotel, I was asked by so-called Concierge or personnel waiting at the door, three times what I’m doing here and if I stay in this hotel. Same happened separately to my partner. That is not a nice feeling. - In 9th floor there is a restaurant where we reserved a table. First strange experience was that the waiter asked us if he should bring us a bottle of Champagner as a starter. Hello? A bottle of Champagne as a starter?? That was ridiculous! Whether the waiter took us not serious or he thought that maybe this German guy (I’m from Germany and working as an Expat) can’t afford a bottle of Champagne. The second strange and impolite experience was that we forced to leave because we don’t have dinner and only wanted to have 2 glasses of wine. You can imagine that the romantic mood was over and may happiness-factor was below zero. Not to mention the looks from the people and guest from the other tables. I was really, really hurt and angry. The waitress said sorry but the evening was ruined. After that I complained at the reception and the employees mentioned that the management will call me later in the hotel room. But: no call from the management. To be honest: not a big surprise. Well, even the management treats not everybody equally. What are the lessons learned for me? Fairmont Hotel was a one and once experience. Never again. In Shanghai you have a bunch of world famous luxury hotels who deserve the name and reputation. Maybe you take customers feedback seriously to improve your hospitality and service: Don’t invest only in shiny expensive locations and materials, please invest also in training and education in your employees and staff because they are your ambassadors of your Hotel. Show the respect to the customers who pay a lot of money to have a unforgettable stay in your Hotel – but in a positive way. P.S. Also teach your employees and staff that they should also treat customers without Gucci, Prada and LV-outfit with respect. Customer is Customer. Robert D.

From entry through the revolving doors to our return through them we were impressed with the attention to detail in the building and decoration and the same attention to detail and helpfulness of the wonderful staff. A true pleasure to stay in the Peace Hotel and that is without mention of its incredible location in Shanghai.

Overall the experience was excellent. A nice welcome on arrival, great service, excellent afternoon tea in the lounge, and a great happy hour. The breakfast was good too. The one exception was the gym. It opens at 8:30 which is too late although they did arrange to open it earlier for us which we appreciated. However, the gym was too hot. It was 25 but it should be 20 or 21 at most. The steam room in the women’s change room was not working well so that was disappointing for such a good hotel. I would expect not to encounter these issues at a 5 star hotel.
